Imani C, usually called Imani, is a former Meadow Lark eldercare worker and one of the principal support fighters and organizers among the surviving human crawlers. She enters the World Dungeon while responsible for a large group of elderly and disabled residents, later becomes an Obsidian Butterfly and Fire Spiritualist, and serves as guildmaster of Safehome Yolanda. Her healing auras, defensive blessings, counterspells, and command ability make her essential in mass-casualty battles, but her position repeatedly forces her to bear responsibility for deaths she cannot prevent.
Life before the collapse
Imani grows up in Detroit as the youngest member of a troubled family. She eventually leaves home despite the disapproval of her older siblings, earns a nursing certificate, and finds work in Wenatchee, Washington. To her, the comparatively quiet town represents an escape from the drugs, violence, and despair associated with her former life. The move does not free her from guilt, however. She continues to feel responsible for the family she left behind, establishing the pattern that later defines her conduct in the dungeon: she seeks peace, but other people consistently look to her when a painful decision must be made.
On the night of the collapse, Imani is working at the Meadow Lark eldercare facility with Yolanda Martinez, while brothers Brandon Andrews and Chris Andrews are repairing a broken oven. A fire alarm forces the staff to evacuate approximately 250 residents into the freezing night shortly before the buildings vanish. The survivors enter the dungeon as a group, taking responsibility for people who cannot move quickly and, in many cases, cannot fully understand what is happening.
The group suffers catastrophic losses before meeting Carl and Donut. During an attack near a tutorial area, Imani uses a sword to kill twelve residents rather than allow the attacking creatures to burn them to death. The dungeon marks her with the Crawler Killer X 12 designation and awards enough experience to help raise her to level ten. The skulls make her look dangerous to strangers, but her conduct when Carl first sees her contradicts that appearance: she quietly escorts a resident to the bathroom, helps another drink water, and continues caring for the remaining people. The deaths are not treated as an easy source of levels. They become the first of several occasions on which the system turns an act of desperate protection into a public accusation.
Protecting Meadow Lark
Only thirty-eight members of the Meadow Lark group remain when Carl and Donut encounter them on the First Floor. Imani is reserved and initially allows Brandon to explain their situation. She nevertheless challenges Carl when he proposes attacking the nearby Ball of Swine borough boss, asking how his improvised plan can work. Once the fight begins, she becomes an active member of the seven-crawler force. She identifies defensible ground inside the boss chamber and helps assemble Carl's segmented barricade in the correct sequence while the enormous rolling boss circles the arena. After the barricade survives the impact, she immediately treats the injured Yolanda with a health potion.
The victory allows the surviving residents to continue toward the next floor, but their movement remains a logistical problem. Imani, Chris, Brandon, and Yolanda distribute food, assist residents with basic needs, and move wheelchairs through a dungeon built for combatants. When the group uses linked platforms and salvaged train cars to approach a stairwell, a rage elemental attacks. Imani and Chris pull residents from their chairs and carry them into a safe room while Carl and Donut try to delay the creature. Imani's magical chain keeps the final platform attached during a gravity-reversal spell, but the attack kills Yolanda and another resident before the door can be secured.
Yolanda's death is one of Imani's defining losses. Imani screams for her during the evacuation and then, once the survivors reach safety, resumes administering potions and moving frightened residents into booths while crying. She later helps devise a method of repeatedly opening the safe-room door so the rage elemental is teleported away, giving Carl and Donut intervals in which to act. After the monster is destroyed, she and the others construct wheeled “people buckets” from salvaged materials and bring thirty-six residents to the descent. Imani is the last member of Meadow Lark to take the ramp to the Third Floor.
Race selection on the Third Floor transforms the group. Brandon remains human, but Imani and Chris choose nonhuman races, while many residents must select forms that can compensate for their physical or cognitive limitations. Imani's precise new abilities are not immediately visible to Carl, yet she remains one of the strongest members of the group and continues to treat the residents as people under her care rather than burdens to be abandoned.
Obsidian Butterfly and the Iron Tangle
By the Fourth Floor, Imani is level twenty-four and has become an Obsidian Butterfly Fire Spiritualist. Her body is thinner and more skeletal, with white skull-like markings on her face and four translucent wings colored orange, yellow, red, white, and black. The wings initially pass through solid objects and cannot carry her in flight. Their contact instead grants beneficial effects to nearby allies, making her race and class a support build suited to protecting a large formation.
When she reunites with Carl at the Desperado Club, Imani remains responsible for the dwindling Meadow Lark survivors. Twenty members of the original group are still alive, and Elle observes that Imani continues to watch over them even though their new races and abilities have made many of them formidable crawlers. During an attack inside the club, Imani spreads her wings around Carl and Donut and simultaneously grants increased strength, damage reduction, and accelerated healing. These effects demonstrate that her contribution is not limited to restoring health after a fight; she can alter the offensive and defensive capacity of an entire group before the decisive exchange.
Imani also becomes a field planner in the Iron Tangle. She and Elle McGibbons explore robot rooms and hidden routes, warn Carl that transformed monsters are more dangerous, and coordinate the defense of Station 36 against waves of wrath ghouls. Rather than chase scattered objectives, Imani chooses a position that can be reinforced and supplied from nearby safe rooms. The coalition brings rescued crawlers to that station, prevents the ghouls from combining into a province boss, and holds the line until the stairwell is available. Even after the exit opens, Imani's group waits for Carl, Donut, and Katia before descending.
The floor also reopens the trauma attached to her player-killer marks. When Carl needs to understand the system's PvP rewards, he reluctantly asks whether she received a coupon for killing the Meadow Lark residents. Imani pauses but answers him, providing information that helps expose how the dungeon incentivizes crawler-on-crawler violence. Her willingness to revisit the event for a practical reason shows both the continuing weight of the deaths and her refusal to let that pain prevent others from surviving.
Evacuations and the rescue of Chris
On the Fifth Floor, Imani and Elle are isolated with their group in a dangerous ocean bubble. Imani helps them learn to operate unfamiliar sailing equipment while they fight pirate orcs, aquatic monsters, and the floor's collapsing geography. At the same time, she remains concerned about Chris, whose behavior changed after he chose the Igneous race and fell under Maggie My's control. She urges Carl not to kill him, emphasizing that he remains her friend and Brandon's brother even after he murders Frank Q while controlled by the infiltrator.
When Chris is finally located, Imani acts as the communication link between him and Carl's group. Chris asks to be killed rather than remain a weapon, but Imani refuses to accept that outcome while another option exists. She supports the plan to incapacitate him and Maggie, carry them through a portal, and use a potion to remove the infiltrator. Her insistence is vindicated when the group separates Chris from Maggie and restores his mind.
Imani's most consequential Fifth Floor decision concerns the Gate of the Feral Gods. Carl's plan can extract hundreds of crawlers from sealed bubbles, but opening the gate risks summoning feral gods into the abandoned areas. Imani agrees to help only if each participating group proves that no crawler will be left behind in its bubble. She, Elle, and Katia interview applicants at the Desperado Club, reject groups that misrepresent their surviving populations, and coordinate eight evacuations involving more than five hundred crawlers. The condition is not sentimental decoration; it limits which rescues proceed and prevents the operation from sacrificing isolated survivors for a larger count.
Safehome Yolanda
The introduction of the guild system on the Sixth Floor turns Imani's informal authority into a recognized office. Although she does not seek the position, the allied parties select her as guildmaster of Safehome Yolanda, named in memory of her dead friend. Team Meadow Lark controls the new organization. At its formation, the level-seven guild contains six parties and sixty-three crawlers, including the Royal Court of Princess Donut.
Safehome Yolanda gives Imani tools to extend the care structure she began at Meadow Lark. Its common area links separate party spaces, its upgrades provide faster rest and shared facilities, and its barracks and training rooms accommodate allied nonplayer characters. Imani manages purchases and group-wide upgrades while continuing to take part in field operations. The guild's name makes Yolanda's loss part of the coalition's identity without reducing her to the circumstances of her death.
During the Hunting Grounds campaign, Imani's wings become solid enough for flight. She dispels Eva's charm from a town's inhabitants, preventing a manipulated crowd from attacking the allied crawlers, and commands coordinated assaults on hunter-held settlements. In one large operation, her force of more than twenty crawlers approaches from the north while Katia and Elle lead the western attack and aerial units wait for Imani's clearance. The hunters scatter; Imani's side continues to move as a coordinated formation.
Her abilities develop alongside that command role. Smart Juice temporarily raises the level of an ally's spell, although it adds a cooldown that can make it unsuitable for rapid combat casting. At the Butcher's Masquerade, Imani applies buffs and counterspells while the crawlers fall into a chaotic battle with hunters, elves, nymphs, and summoned enemies. She removes stacked debuffs as they appear, treats wounded crawlers during brief defensive openings, and helps keep Donut alive long enough to use the spell that strips Diwata's defenses. After the battle, she continues triage, recovers the transformed Popov brothers from the bodies, and wraps Carl in her wings to heal and comfort him.
The Eighth Floor
The Eighth Floor tests Imani's role as healer by making her responsible for a four-crawler card squad. Her own summoned totem kills all four teammates during a battle, and the system assigns the deaths to her, adding four more player-killer skulls. Imani returns to the guildhall wounded and sobbing. The outcome mirrors her earliest dungeon trauma: a protective leader survives, the people under her care do not, and the dungeon converts the event into a visible accusation.
Even while grieving, she continues to provide medical support. When Katia's use of several addictive dungeon drugs is exposed, Imani works with Mordecai to obtain and administer the cures. She gives the first treatment, prepares a patch for Katia's blitz-stick addiction, and supplies buffs meant to keep her conscious. Imani also warns that Katia's many active debuffs make further action dangerous, opposing Carl's attempt to return her immediately to the field even though she ultimately gives Katia the requested assistance.
Near the end of the floor, Imani refuses to use a one-person escape key that Carl offers her. She instead helps defend the coalition's remaining exit and stays with the larger group. When the final plan requires the stairwell chamber to be pulled upward, she remains with Carl and Donut beneath the marked location. She thanks them for not abandoning her and acknowledges that survival has not left any of them unharmed. Her player-killer skulls remain visible as the three are lifted out of the Cuban memory zone.
Faction Wars
On the Ninth Floor, Imani serves simultaneously as a battlefield support specialist, rescue worker, and senior coalition organizer. Before an assault across No Man's Land, she moves along the trench line applying buffs, strengthens the crawler operating the trebuchet, and adds a calming effect to the soldiers around Carl and Donut. She casts Total Ear Protection on Donut and Mongo before the opening bombardment. During the charge, she repeatedly leaves the forward movement to retrieve wounded soldiers, carrying two casualties at once into a newly formed trench while artillery and poison weapons strike the battlefield.
Her support magic has expanded into a broad aura system. Contact with her wings produces persistent effects, while her more specialized healing and protection abilities function as Blessings that drain mana while active. She can maintain layered defenses across a formation, clear mental and physical debuffs, protect individuals from sound-based attacks, and create shields strong enough to shelter multiple allies from a devastating blast. These abilities make her particularly effective in battles involving hundreds or thousands of combatants, where individual healing spells alone would be inadequate.
Imani also joins the infiltration of the Madness stronghold. She helps disarm alarm traps, protects Carl when enemy mind mages overwhelm him with psionic effects, and participates in the rescue of Louis after the enemy replaces his organs. Her judgment remains independent of Carl's: she, Elle, and Katia openly challenge his tendency to control operations outside his own assignment, even while continuing to execute the shared plan.
During a brief psychic connection, Carl sees the pressure beneath Imani's composure. She does not want to be the person who makes every hard decision, but leadership repeatedly falls to her because others trust her competence. He also learns that she is in love with Chris. Their relationship remains restrained in public; before a later battle, Imani embraces him with her wings, and Chris begins to touch her face before stopping. The moment reflects the caution of two people who have lost much of their original group and cannot assume that either will survive the next operation.
Imani survives the major Faction Wars battles and remains active during the evacuation of Larracos. In the final minutes of the Ninth Floor, she helps Florin and Jurgen persuade Lucia Mar to accept an exit deal rather than continue into another floor. Her last verified actions preserve the same priority she carried into the dungeon from Meadow Lark: keeping a survivor alive is more important than whether that survivor is powerful, cooperative, or easy to save.
