Dungeon Crawler Carl is the first novel in Matt Dinniman's Dungeon Crawler Carl series. It introduces Carl, Princess Donut, the alien-run survival program Dungeon Crawler World: Earth, and the multi-level dungeon created after Earth's buildings and infrastructure are destroyed during the Collapse. The story follows Carl and Donut from their entry into the First Floor through their descent toward the Third Floor. The novel establishes the series' central combination of LitRPG mechanics, survival horror, science fiction, fantasy, and dark comedy. Carl enters the dungeon in a leather jacket, boxer shorts, and pink Crocs after going outside to retrieve Donut. The cat begins as his former girlfriend's pet but becomes a sapient crawler after receiving a pet reward. Together they learn that survival depends not only on levels and combat, but also on audience attention, media appearances, corporate rules, sponsorship, and the ability to exploit the dungeon's own systems. The Ace hardcover edition was published on August 27, 2024, with 464 pages. Later print formats followed, while the novel's core story remained the first volume of the series. At approximately 2:23 a.m. Pacific time, every structure on Earth is pulled into the ground. Anyone indoors is killed in the initial event. Surviving humans receive a broadcast explaining that the Borant Corporation has reclaimed the planet's resources and opened entrances to an eighteen-floor dungeon. People who enter become crawlers in a galactic entertainment product. Carl survives because he is outdoors searching for Donut during dangerously cold weather. With no practical alternative, he carries the cat into the nearest stairwell. The pair soon discover that the dungeon presents reality through game-like menus, levels, achievements, inventory, loot boxes, skills, magic, and colored status indicators. Death, however, is permanent. Carl leaves his apartment during the night after Donut escapes through a window. He is dressed for only a short trip and wears Beatrice's pink Crocs. The Collapse destroys the apartment building and the rest of the built world around him. A system announcement directs survivors to dungeon entrances before the surface becomes uninhabitable. Carl and Donut enter together. Carl receives early achievements for bringing a cat, lacking suitable clothing, entering quickly, and surviving initial encounters. The dungeon's mocking artificial intelligence immediately takes an unusual interest in his bare feet. Carl and Donut reach a Tutorial Guild operated by Mordecai, a former crawler serving a long contract as a guide. Mordecai explains the basic structure of the crawl, including levels, stats, inventory, loot, safe rooms, floor deadlines, viewer metrics, and the distinction between crawlers, mobs, and non-player characters. Donut consumes a pet biscuit from a reward and transforms. She becomes intelligent, gains speech, and enters the game as Princess Donut. Her show-cat identity, high Charisma, magic potential, and instinct for performance quickly make her as important to the party as Carl. The pair fight low-level monsters while learning their builds. Carl develops an unarmed combat style built around punches, kicks, and improvised explosives. Donut gains Magic Missile and other magical tools. Their first major conflicts include goblins, bad llamas, and the neighborhood boss known as the Hoarder. The Hoarder encounter teaches Carl that boss rooms are puzzles as well as combat arenas. He and Donut survive through observation, improvised tactics, and willingness to use the environment. The victory increases their visibility and produces valuable rewards. Carl and Donut encounter Frank Q., Maggie My, Yvette, and Rebecca W., a group formed after a firefight around a warehouse at the moment of the Collapse. The meeting introduces the danger posed by human crawlers who see others as sources of loot and advancement. Frank and Maggie attempt to manipulate the encounter, while Rebecca reveals the group's instability. The conflict ends with Rebecca dead and Carl marked by the implications of killing another crawler. Frank, Maggie, and Yvette continue as hostile or morally compromised figures whose choices will matter in later books. Seeking faster transportation, Carl and Donut return to the goblin neighborhood. Carl's pass changes approaching goblins from hostile to neutral. Donut names three of them B.A., Face, and Murdock, then uses her Charisma to make them lead the party to engineers. At the workshop, the crawlers negotiate with goblin shamankas Rory and Lorelai. The engineers build a steam-powered Goblin Chopper. The sequence expands the dungeon beyond combat, showing that intelligent mobs have local societies, technical roles, and rules that can be exploited. The chopper becomes a major transportation asset and deepens Carl's mechanical and construction-related skills. It also brings the party into conflict with the Goblin Chieftain and additional neighborhood dangers. Carl and Donut meet survivors from the Meadow Lark Adult Care Community. The group includes caregivers Brandon An, Chris Andrews, Imani C, and Yolanda Martinez, along with dozens of elderly and vulnerable residents. They entered the dungeon late and reached the Second Floor at level one. Helping them creates a severe strategic burden. The residents slow movement and provide limited combat value, but Carl refuses to abandon them. The group constructs improvised transport and moves toward safety while the floor deadline approaches. The Meadow Lark arc defines Carl's moral code. He knows the dungeon wants contestants to treat vulnerable people as disposable. Protecting them becomes both a humane choice and an act of resistance against the incentives built into the game. Carl and Donut's popularity leads to off-floor media appearances. They are transported to Dungeon Crawler After Hours, hosted by Odette, a former crawler with a hidden connection to Mordecai. Donut excels in the interview format, while Carl learns that crawler fame can provide protection and resources. Odette privately warns them about race selection, trust, and the risks attached to valuable loot. She also asks them to contact Mordecai after the crawl, exposing unresolved history between the two former crawlers. The interview makes clear that the dungeon is part of a much larger entertainment and political system. Producers, administrators, sponsors, and viewers shape what happens even when they are not physically present on a floor. The Second Floor contains quadrants, neighborhood monsters, dangerous environmental effects, and multiple routes toward the next descent. Carl and Donut fight creatures including mind horrors, rage elementals, kobolds, danger dingoes, brindle grubs, and bosses. Carl's approach becomes increasingly technical. He studies mob behavior, chains skills together, constructs explosive devices, and uses the inventory's rules to make plans the dungeon designers did not intend. Donut improves her magic while using social influence to secure cooperation and audience support. The Meadow Lark convoy is attacked near the Big Shot Chicken safe room. A Rage Elemental and its environmental effect throw residents into the ceiling and walls. Yolanda dies during the chaos. Mrs. McGibbons, a ninety-nine-year-old wheelchair user, is critically injured. Carl returns for Mrs. McGibbons rather than retreating. He carries her through the altered hallway, gets her into the safe room, and returns to attack the elemental. The rescue becomes a major broadcast moment, but for Carl the victory is inseparable from the people he could not save. Substitute administrator Mukta sends Carl and Donut to Death Watch Extreme Dungeon Mayhem, hosted by The Maestro. A production robot, Mexx-55, prepares them inside a rented trailer. The Maestro forces Li Jun and Zhang to play a game determining whether they can save themselves, Li Na, or their injured manager. Carl refuses to participate in the cruelty, then joins the broadcast early and turns the audience against the host. He gives the trapped party a plan that uses troglodytes and Brindled Vespas against one another. All four escape. The confrontation establishes the Maestro as a personal antagonist and teaches Carl how to weaponize his market value. He cannot defeat the media system directly, but he can make his popularity expensive to ignore. Carl and Donut say goodbye to the remaining Meadow Lark survivors before the descent. Mrs. McGibbons mistakes Carl for her late husband Barry. Carl reassures her despite knowing he cannot guarantee her safety. The separation allows Carl and Donut to continue their own route but leaves the fate of the vulnerable survivors unresolved. Later books reveal that several, including Mrs. McGibbons, Imani, Brandon, and Chris, become formidable crawlers. Near the end of the floor, Donut receives the opportunity to choose a pet. She selects a small, pink-feathered Mongoliensis. The creature is initially hostile and difficult to control. Donut teaches it to hunt, protects it from a Brindled Vespa, and forms a bond. The pet becomes Mongo, Donut's Royal Steed and a continuing member of the party. His arrival changes Donut's combat role and gives the series one of its principal companion characters. Mordecai prepares Carl and Donut for the race and class selection that begins on the Third Floor. He explains that their choices will shape every later stage of the crawl. Carl remains human, while Donut's options are constrained by the value of her recognizable cat identity. The novel ends with the pair descending together, more famous and capable than when they entered but newly aware of the political, economic, and personal forces aligned against them. Carl is a former United States Coast Guard member and the primary viewpoint character. His strengths are practical judgment, mechanical thinking, endurance, and refusal to accept the moral rules imposed by the dungeon. His build develops around unarmed combat, feet, explosives, and constructed devices. Donut is a prize-winning tortoiseshell Persian cat transformed into a sapient crawler. She is a magic user, performer, and social strategist. Her high Charisma and growing audience make her essential to survival. Mordecai is a former crawler serving as a tutorial guildmaster. He provides rules and build advice while operating under restrictions that prevent him from revealing everything he knows. Major supporting characters include Odette, Zev, Agatha, Brandon, Chris, Imani, Mrs. McGibbons, Frank Q., Maggie My, Li Jun, Li Na, Zhang, the Maestro, and Mongo. The novel also introduces the System AI and multiple corporate or media voices that shape the crawl. The novel establishes the foundational systems used throughout the series:

  • crawler levels, stats, and skills
  • inventory and item examination
  • achievements and reward boxes
  • safe rooms and tutorial guilds
  • floor deadlines and collapse mechanics
  • hostile, neutral, and friendly indicators
  • parties and chat
  • magic, equipment, buffs, and debuffs
  • viewer counts, followers, and favorites
  • media appearances and appearance fees
  • race and class selection
  • These mechanics are never purely neutral. The System AI uses them to entertain viewers, encourage risk, manufacture conflict, and reward behavior that may be humiliating or destructive. Every death occurs inside a commercial broadcast. Viewers consume crawler pain as episodic content, while producers shape events to create marketable stories. Carl and Donut must become entertainers without surrendering control of who they are. Carl's defining decisions involve people who cannot repay him. The Meadow Lark rescue, Mrs. McGibbons's survival, and the warehouse group's escape all cost time and increase danger. These choices separate resistance from simple self-preservation. Donut becomes intelligent but retains the personality, attachments, and grievances formed before the dungeon. Carl's clothing, feet, and public image become parts of a brand he did not choose. The dungeon changes bodies and statistics while trying to rewrite people as roles. Carl repeatedly survives by distinguishing the stated scenario from the actual mechanics. Boss arenas, mob behavior, inventory rules, production contracts, and audience expectations all contain weaknesses. This approach becomes the foundation of his later rebellion. The novel began the series in 2020. Ace published a 464-page hardcover edition on August 27, 2024. The current print line presents the book as the opening volume of the bestselling series. Audio editions narrated by Jeff Hays are a major part of the franchise's readership, but the narrative content of this article follows the novel text. The next book, Carl's Doomsday Scenario, begins with race and class selection and continues onto the Third Floor. Several apparently minor Book 1 characters become important later, particularly Imani, Elle McGibbons, Li Na, Agatha, Zev, Odette, and the Maestro. Early details involving the System AI, Borant, Mordecai's past, and the nature of NPCs also develop into major series arcs. The book contains 47 numbered chapters followed by an epilogue. The Book 1 Chapter Index links each chapter summary, appearance list, location, achievement, and timeline event.
