Maggie My was a human crawler who murdered other survivors alongside her former husband, Frank Q., during the first floor of the World Dungeon. A former Seattle police detective, she entered the dungeon while pursuing their daughter, Yvette. The family's effort to survive by killing crawlers culminated in Yvette's death. Maggie subsequently pursued Carl and Princess Donut, became a parasitic Scree infiltrator, and took control of Chris Andrews. She died on the fifth floor after Carl separated her from Chris and Mongo killed her exposed Scree body.
Before the dungeon
Maggie and Frank had separated five years before the Collapse and were divorced. Their daughter Yvette had run away more than once. Maggie's younger brother, a Pierce County sheriff's deputy, was protective of Maggie and blamed Frank for Yvette's problems. When the deputy found Yvette on the night of the Collapse, he summoned both parents to collect her. Frank later told Carl that the call pulled him away from a surveillance assignment. The family met in a parking lot around two in the morning and were arguing when the buildings disappeared and a dungeon entrance opened.
Yvette ran into the entrance first, and Maggie went after her. Frank pushed Maggie amid the confusion. Her brother tried to handcuff him, and the men entered the dungeon fighting. Frank choked the deputy unconscious; rat-kin killed him before he recovered. The dungeon rewarded Frank for attacking a family member with a legendary box containing the Ring of Divine Suffering. The deputy's death left Maggie, Frank, and Yvette together, but it did not resolve the conflict that had brought them to the parking lot.
Frank initially presented Maggie to Carl as a fellow customs officer and his partner in a surveillance operation. That story was part of his attempt to conceal their crawler murders. Frank later identified his own work as customs enforcement and Maggie's as detective work for the Seattle Police Department. The accounts also establish that the two were former spouses, despite their later introduction to other crawlers as a married couple.
The first floor killings
At a tutorial guild, the family's floating Mind Horror guide told them that killing other crawlers was necessary for survival. Yvette cried during this instruction, and Maggie held her. Frank and Maggie acted on the guide's advice while their daughter resisted it. The guide's claim explains a pressure on the parents, but their later attacks were deliberate: they approached other survivors as potential allies, waited until those people were vulnerable, and opened fire.
The attack on the party that included Rebecca W. exposed Maggie's part in this strategy. Maggie and Frank introduced themselves as a couple and identified Yvette as their daughter. When the larger group's backs were turned, both parents shot them. Rebecca and another survivor escaped; Frank pursued them and eventually killed Rebecca. Maggie remained with Yvette and one wounded survivor. She put a gun in her daughter's hand and instructed her to finish the man for experience. Yvette refused. The scene establishes that Maggie was more than an accomplice to Frank's attacks: she fired on unsuspecting crawlers and tried to bring Yvette into the killing.
The family continued targeting isolated survivors. Footage later shown on the Maestro's program included people who seemed relieved to meet other humans before Maggie and Frank killed them; some appeared elderly or homeless. Yvette accompanied the parents on some of these occasions but did not participate. When Carl first examined Maggie, five crawler-killer skulls appeared beside her name. Frank carried three. The markers counted kills, while the broadcast showed the choices and the daughter's refusal behind that count.
Their kills brought equipment and abilities that improved their method. Maggie received a ring that cast an area of stealth. The concealed space was stationary rather than moving with its users, so an ambush required them to choose a position and wait. Frank received a potion granting Find Crawler, a way to locate nearby survivors. The two abilities worked together: Frank could find a target, and Maggie could hide their approach or position. Carl later saw the stealth tactic in use when Maggie and Yvette remained out of sight while Frank spoke to him.
The saferoom ambush
Frank approached Carl and Donut in a first floor saferoom, claiming that Rebecca had led a trafficking group and that he had killed her in self-defense. He also implied Maggie was dead. In fact, Maggie and Yvette were concealed nearby. While Frank told his story, the former spouses communicated and prepared to shoot their hosts. Frank's claims did not fit the evidence Carl had already seen, and Carl realized Frank remained in a party with another living member when Frank received less than the full experience from a saferoom cookie.
Maggie and Frank emerged and fired at Carl and Donut. The saferoom rule against crawler violence froze both attackers before their shots could land. Carl and Donut fled. Carl examined Maggie while she was immobilized: she was listed as crawler 324,116, a level-nine human without an assigned class. He saw an athletic woman of about forty with closely cropped brown hair, metallic pants and boots, a leather jacket, and a gun. Maggie's attack showed the limits of her stealth advantage: it got her into position, but it could not override the protected room's rules. Yvette had been hiding with Maggie and remained in the room while her parents were immobilized.
Carl placed a trap in a dead dungeon rat outside. He expected Frank to loot the corpse as he had looted Rebecca, but did not know Yvette was present. The rat's inventory contained lit explosives, including dynamite. After the saferoom penalty ended, Maggie, Frank, and Yvette approached the body. Maggie warned Frank not to loot it. He did so anyway, pulled out lit dynamite, dropped it, and tried to flee with them. The blast wounded all three. It severed Frank's right hand and left Yvette badly injured.
Yvette and the ring
Before the saferoom attack, Maggie and Frank had forced Yvette to wear the Ring of Divine Suffering. Frank later admitted that Yvette was not gaining levels because she refused to kill and that he made her use the ring as a supposed compromise. Maggie told Yvette whom to mark: Carl. The ring offered gains if its marked target died, but prevented its wearer from healing while that target remained alive. Frank said they selected Carl rather than Donut because they thought the cat might escape.
The choice became fatal after the rat exploded. Carl was still alive, so Yvette could not heal her injuries. Maggie knelt beside her daughter, wept, and strangled her as Yvette cried in pain. Frank was wounded nearby. The broadcast footage first led Carl to believe Yvette would have recovered if Maggie had not killed her; Frank's later account of the ring revealed the healing restriction that the footage omitted. Maggie's immediate act ended Yvette's suffering, but the condition arose from the parents' decision to impose the ring and target Carl. Frank's disregard of Maggie's warning about the rat then caused the injuries it would not allow Yvette to heal.
The ring also clarifies the difference between Yvette's conduct and her parents' stated aims. She had refused to shoot a wounded crawler and had not joined their other murders. Maggie and Frank nevertheless made her survival depend on a marked stranger's death. Maggie had earlier tried to place a gun in Yvette's hand; assigning Carl as the ring's target was a second attempt to make her share the parents' method. Yvette's refusal did not protect her from its consequences.
The Maestro's broadcast
On the Maestro's program, Maggie and Frank appeared opposite Carl and Donut while a condensed account of the family's first floor was shown. The footage revealed their tutorial guide's advice, the ambush of Rebecca's group, Yvette's refusal to kill, their attacks on other crawlers, Carl's trap, and Maggie strangling Yvette. It was edited and shown out of sequence. The program did not disclose that the ring prevented Yvette from healing, a fact Maggie said the presentation had left out without explaining it to the audience.
Maggie accused Carl and tried to stab him across the program's barrier. Her blade could not reach him. Frank attempted to calm her, but she pushed him away. The appearance turned her private loss and public acts of murder into a confrontation staged for viewers. Maggie's threat to hunt Carl and Donut remained serious even though the attack in the studio could not reach them.
The Maestro gave the pair a legendary skill potion intended to strengthen Find Crawler. He said it could raise the ability to level fifteen immediately, allowing a search by name regardless of distance, or potentially to level twenty after choosing a suitable class. Maggie took the potion and asked whether she could use it even though Frank held the existing skill. The gift offered a means to continue her pursuit. Frank later said Maggie kept it when they separated, but he did not know whether she ever drank it.
Separation from Frank
Maggie and Frank parted near the end of the second floor after arguing over their future and their valuable items. According to Frank, he wanted to sell both the potion and the Ring of Divine Suffering to buy equipment and training. Maggie retained the potion and continued to seek direct revenge on Carl and Donut. Frank's account is the principal description of the breakup; it does not establish Maggie's private reasoning beyond her continued pursuit.
Frank moved on without Maggie and later encountered Carl in the Desperado Club on the Iron Tangle. He admitted that Carl had defended himself, and that Maggie blamed the wrong person. Frank was still hostile: he gave Carl the ring hoping its power and temptation would corrupt him. His decision contrasted with Maggie's direct pursuit, but he did not relinquish the wish to make Carl suffer. His later disclosure supplied the missing explanation for Yvette's inability to heal.
Soon afterward, Chris Andrews's body killed Frank at the club by crushing his head. At the time, the act seemed at odds with Chris's relationship to the other crawlers. It became clear on the fifth floor that Maggie had taken control of Chris. She later told Carl that she had killed Frank. She also said she had believed the matter finished after his death, before a caprid liaison approached her about killing Carl. The novels do not establish a single precise motive for her decision to murder Frank.
Scree infiltrator and Chris Andrews
Maggie had become a Scree infiltrator, a parasitic crawler capable of taking over a living host. A Scree worm enters a body and takes days to complete its annexation. Once it gains control, the host remains conscious but cannot direct their body. Maggie entered Chris near the end of the third floor. Chris's Igneous form gave her a strong, heat-bearing body and the ability to burrow and hide in sand. Her control also let her move among people who knew Chris, at least until her words and behavior betrayed her.
On the fifth floor, Maggie approached Carl while wearing Chris's body. She claimed that using chat hurt him and offered an account of his movements, but Carl noticed inconsistencies, including her statements about Chris's family and game guide. He recognized her as Maggie. She produced a spiked ball, later identified as a rare divine grenade. Before she could use it, Katia struck Chris's head with a special bolt that petrified his body temporarily. The intervention stopped Maggie without killing her host.
Mordecai identified her as an infiltrator and explained Chris's condition: he had been aware while Maggie controlled his actions. Carl and his allies considered how to remove the parasite without killing Chris. That concern distinguished their response from simply treating his body as the enemy. Chris was alive inside it, and what others saw him do—including Frank's murder—had been directed by Maggie.
Near the end of the floor, Maggie hid with Chris in the sand while Carl's group dealt with a winding box. She could make her voice seem to come from somewhere else. Although Carl had expected an attempt on his life, he realized her immediate objective was the box. Maggie claimed that others held another daughter of hers and threatened to bring her back as a monster if she did not cooperate. She described a caprid cleric and liaison who had promised help if she killed Carl. These were Maggie's claims during the confrontation; the identity and circumstances of the daughter were not independently established there.
Maggie emerged and used Chris's body to seize and throw the box. Carl drank a Phase Lava Rock potion, allowing him to pass through the Igneous body and reach the worm lodged in Chris's brain. He pulled Maggie out without killing Chris. She bit his hand and burrowed into his body instead. Carl took a prepared healing potion before she could reach his brain; it forced her out through his neck. Mongo caught and killed the exposed worm. Chris survived, and Carl brought him along to the next floor.
Maggie's final encounter made the difference between her and Chris physically clear. Chris had been the visible attacker, but he could neither consent to nor stop the actions carried out through him. Maggie's death ended her control over him and her pursuit of Carl and Donut. The other damage was not undone: Yvette and Frank were dead, and Chris had lived through the use of his body to kill Frank.
