> Spoiler warning: This article reveals Mordecai and Odette's shared history and events through the ninth floor.
Mordecai and Odette are a former crawler and manager whose partnership ended with the death of Mordecai's brother, Uzzi. Odette originally promised to help Mordecai and his party escape their crawl, but her desire to finish her own indentureship led her to arrange an illegal intervention on the tenth floor. When that arrangement failed, she ordered a plan that sacrificed Uzzi so the other crawlers could open the stairwell. Mordecai survived, but he regarded Odette's decision as a betrayal and later testified against her. Centuries afterward, during the Earth crawl, Odette attempts to protect Mordecai and prepare for his freedom without ever obtaining his forgiveness.
Their relationship combines genuine attachment with coercion. Odette admires Mordecai, follows his later life closely, and gives Carl and Princess Donut information intended to keep both them and Mordecai alive. At the same time, she repeatedly makes decisions on his behalf. Her secret effort to bind him to Donut as a permanent manager helps the Earth crawlers survive, but it also costs Mordecai the guild posting and independence he expected. The result is not a restored alliance. Through the end of the ninth floor, Odette acts from guilt and Mordecai continues to hold her responsible for Uzzi's death.
From game guide to manager
Odette entered dungeon service after surviving her own crawl. She had lost nearly everyone who entered with her, including her young cousin Pieter, and accepted an exit deal after reaching the stairwell for the thirteenth floor. Instead of becoming a Celestial Attendant like her surviving friend Armita, she chose to work as a game guide. Under the rules then in use, a guide could offer to become a crawler's manager, and Odette made that offer to Mordecai.
Her choice was partly an attempt to give later crawlers the help she had lacked. It was also personal. Mordecai's devotion to his brother reminded Odette of Pieter, and one of Mordecai's human transformations even resembled her cousin. She promised to help him escape the dungeon and became manager to a party that included Mordecai, Uzzi, Chaco, and Hold Steady.
Odette proved capable enough to help the group survive Faction Wars and reach the tenth floor. She guided their build choices as well as their movement through the dungeon. Mordecai considered the skyfowl Storm Commander class during his third-floor selection, but Odette steered him away from it and recommended it to Uzzi instead. Mordecai became a Changeling, a choice that later made him the party member best suited to infiltration and reconnaissance.
The partnership was never free of conflicting incentives. Odette's contract rewarded her when her crawlers reached deeper floors, and a successful descent to the eleventh floor would end the remaining seasons of her indentureship. She also believed that taking a tenth-floor exit deal was worse than continuing. When the party wanted to stop rather than attempt an exceptionally dangerous exit puzzle, she persuaded them to press on. Affection for the group and self-interest therefore led her toward the same decision: the crawlers would risk another floor, while Odette would gain both their continued survival and her own freedom if they succeeded.
The tenth-floor betrayal
The party's tenth-floor route ended at a storm puzzle assembled from nine pieces. Hold Steady had to keep the completed disk magically charged inside the stairwell circle, and a storm god or a god-tier storm attack then had to touch it. Mordecai used his Changeling forms to carry and activate a summoning box far from the stairwell. Chaco used bard magic to attract the summoned deities, while Uzzi's Storm Commander abilities protected the party from the acidic rain.
Odette did not trust the party's plan to work without outside help. Through Armita, she secretly arranged for Huanxin Jinx to enter the sponsored goddess Dodola and strike the puzzle with storm magic. Odette promised Huanxin a share of the bonus she would receive if Mordecai reached the eleventh floor. Because the bargain asked an Ascendency sponsor to intervene for Odette's financial benefit, it constituted both cheating and fraud.
The agreement became unstable as the floor approached collapse. Huanxin first demanded a larger share and eventually raised her price to half of Odette's bonus. Paying that amount would have left Odette unable to purchase secure residency in the inner system after her release. Odette refused the new demand. Huanxin teleported away the other summoned storm god, Adad, and moved Dodola toward the crawlers rather than helping them.
Mordecai, still struggling back from the summoning point, proposed his own solution. His Final Blow skill could make the puzzle a secondary target of an attack directed at him. If Dodola struck him, the same divine force would activate the exit. Mordecai expected the attack to kill him, but he chose that sacrifice himself and told Uzzi they would meet on the other side.
Odette rejected Mordecai's choice because his death would also end her chance of release. She privately ordered Chaco to worship Dodola, strike Uzzi with the Dart of Ophiotaurus, and trap both Uzzi and the summoned goddess inside a containment spell. Chaco refused at first, arguing that Mordecai had freely chosen an honorable death. Odette responded that the party would not survive the eleventh floor without her and promised Chaco continuing help if he obeyed. She also falsely claimed that Mordecai's plan could not work because Dodola was sponsored.
Chaco ultimately threw the dart into Uzzi. Uzzi understood enough to spread his wings in acceptance, but the decision had been made without either brother's informed consent. The dart used Uzzi as the vessel for Dodola's new summoning. He died as the goddess emerged inside Chaco's containment, and the resulting divine attack activated the puzzle and killed Dodola. Mordecai arrived in time to see Uzzi convulsing and dying. When he learned that Chaco had used the dart on his brother, he attacked Chaco and carried their fight through the newly opened stairwell.
Odette's plan achieved its mechanical purpose. Mordecai, Chaco, and Hold Steady reached the eleventh floor, and Odette's contract ended. Its personal cost was immediate. Mordecai told Odette that he intended to escape the dungeon, find her, and kill her. The accusation was not based only on the loss of Uzzi. Odette had overridden Mordecai's voluntary sacrifice, pressured Chaco with misleading information, and substituted the life of Mordecai's brother because Mordecai himself was essential to her release.
Separation, confession, and trial
Mordecai made his own exit deal at the end of the eleventh floor a few weeks later. That deal did not return him to an ordinary life; it converted him into a non-combatant guild employee serving later crawls. Odette left the dungeon with her bonus, but her legal and personal reckoning continued outside it.
Odette voluntarily disclosed the illegal arrangement. Huanxin retaliated before authorities acted, killing Armita during the next crawl while Armita remained bound to her Celestial Attendant role. Odette was eventually arrested and tried, while Huanxin received only a temporary exclusion from participation and a permanent ban from controlling Dodola. Mordecai testified against Odette. He later described the proceeding as a spectacle and said she pleaded to a lesser offense shortly before the verdict. Her warrant was purchased by the man who became her husband.
Odette regarded her legal punishment as inadequate to the harm she had caused. Although she could have restored the legs lost during her own crawl, she chose not to do so because accepting that repair felt wrong after Uzzi's death and Armita's murder. She also watched Mordecai whenever she could. Changes to the dungeon's NPC pools lengthened his service, leaving him to pass through season after season while grieving his brother, his party, and his lost world. Odette came to believe that she had broken him and that freedom might leave him without anyone or any purpose.
Mordecai did not interpret that attention as care. When Odette first asked Carl and Donut to tell him she wanted contact after his final season, his response was categorical rejection. He described her as intelligent, useful, and deeply self-interested. Significantly, he did not advise the crawlers to avoid her program; he considered it one of the few shows worth attending. His judgment separated Odette's professional value from her trustworthiness. She could provide excellent advice and still abandon someone when helping no longer served her interests.
Odette's intervention in the Earth crawl
Odette finds Carl and Donut because she is monitoring Mordecai's guild room. After their first interview, she reveals that she was his trainer and asks them to serve as intermediaries. She also explains one of Mordecai's hidden incentives: his season counts toward the end of his indentureship only if one of his assigned crawlers reaches the fourth floor. That disclosure helps Carl understand why Mordecai is invested in their progress, but it also demonstrates how readily Odette discusses parts of Mordecai's contract that he has not chosen to share.
Her most consequential intervention comes during the third-floor race and class selections. Odette advises Carl to look for a class benefit that assigns Donut a permanent manager. Carl follows that guidance without warning Mordecai, and Donut's Former Child Actor class binds Mordecai to her saferoom for the rest of her crawl. He loses his anticipated magic-guild posting, its information resources, his larger room, and ready access to stored materials. Odette knows he will be furious, but she also knows that his alchemical and institutional knowledge will greatly improve Donut's chances of survival.
The maneuver repeats the central problem in their old partnership. Odette identifies a result that may protect Mordecai and the people around him, then secures it without his consent. In the original crawl, she chose Uzzi's sacrifice over Mordecai's. In the Earth crawl, she chooses permanent managerial duty over the future Mordecai expected. The consequences are vastly different, but both decisions treat her assessment of his welfare as more important than his right to decide.
Odette's help after that appointment remains materially valuable. She warns Carl about threats, supplies information from outside the dungeon, and continues to monitor Mordecai. Her interest also gives other people leverage: Hekla recognizes that recruiting Donut would provide access to a permanent manager, while Mordecai's connection to Odette makes their history part of the entertainment surrounding the Earth season. By the sixth floor, Zev warns Carl that putting Odette and Mordecai physically together could provoke him into attacking her, jeopardizing his contract and the safety of the changeling children he has taken into Donut's space.
Guilt without reconciliation
Odette eventually gives Carl a detailed account of the betrayal. She acknowledges that she had promised to help Mordecai, pushed his party farther than they wished to go, made the illegal bargain, and allowed her fixation on freedom to override everything else. She says her later actions are directed toward easing the guilt she feels for Mordecai, Pieter, and Armita. She has also created a trust intended to make Mordecai's transition out of indentureship easier and made similar provision for Chaco and other former crawlers she managed.
Her confession does not amount to reconciliation because Mordecai is not present and does not accept it. Nor does it remove the self-interest from her later plans. Odette's campaign against Huanxin offers revenge for Uzzi and Armita, but it also gives Odette a purpose and a possible answer to her own guilt. Her broader opposition to the crawl may prevent comparable suffering in the future, yet she remains a wealthy host who profits from broadcasting current crawlers' suffering. Carl explicitly challenges that contradiction when she claims her work is necessary to change the system from within.
The ninth floor provides the clearest statement of Mordecai's position. Unable to attack Huanxin directly because of his non-combatant status, he supplies Donut with a crossbow bolt tipped with his mother's ashes. He tells Huanxin that Uzzi died because of her, Odette, and Chaco, while assigning Huanxin the largest share of blame. The distinction matters: Mordecai recognizes the outside manipulation that trapped the party, but he does not absolve the people who carried out the plan.
By the end of the ninth floor, Mordecai and Odette have compatible enemies but no restored trust. Odette tries to secure his future, strike at Huanxin, and dismantle the machinery that made their choices possible. Mordecai builds a new family around Donut, Carl, and the changeling children rather than returning to his former manager. Their relationship remains defined by a harm that assistance, money, and shared opposition cannot by themselves repair.
