Huanxin Jinx is a Grixist industrialist, recurring Celestial Ascendancy participant, and one of the most powerful outside actors to intervene in the Earth crawl. She is the chief executive of Icon Industries, a major habitat-construction concern, and possesses wealth sufficient to influence governments. During the eighth floor she sponsors the goddess Eileithyia, bargains with Katia Grim, and uses Carl's need to save Katia to force Odette toward the Ninth Floor faction game. Her current campaign grows from an older conflict with Odette, Mordecai, and Mordecai's deceased brother. Huanxin belongs to the Grixist Swarm and is described as thin-necked, hairy, and six-eyed. Her importance comes less from physical presence than from institutional reach. Icon Industries builds large-scale habitats, and Mordecai characterizes its leader as so rich that governments seek her loans. She has spent many seasons participating in the Celestial Ascendancy, a sponsorship game whose divine avatars become physically relevant when crawlers reach the Twelfth Floor. She has never won, but longevity gives her extensive knowledge of its rules and loopholes. Her money does not make her a neutral patron. Huanxin treats the dungeon as both competition and arena for personal revenge. She can wait across seasons, employ intermediaries, and shape a crawler's apparent quest without revealing the whole bargain. Carl consequently encounters her as a pressure system: even when she is not present in person, her promises and threats redirect alliances. The roots of Huanxin's feud appear in the account of Mordecai's crawl. On the Tenth Floor, Odette was managing a party that included Mordecai, his brother Uzzi, Chaco, and Hold Steady. Their route was collapsing, and a puzzle needed to be struck by a storm god's magic. Through the demigod attendant Armita, Odette made an illegal agreement with Huanxin, who was driving the storm goddess Dodola. Huanxin could enchant the rain and thus activate the puzzle. Huanxin increased her price at the last moment. Odette refused, redirected the encounter, trapped Dodola, and allowed Chaco to kill the avatar. The maneuver opened the route but did not prevent Uzzi's death. It also eliminated Huanxin from that season's Ascendancy before the main contest began. Odette later confessed to the bribery scheme. She was arrested, while Huanxin received a temporary participation ban and was permanently barred from Dodola. Huanxin's retaliation was direct. When she returned in a later season, she killed Armita inside the dungeon, where the act could be treated as legal play. The episode explains why Mordecai fears her, why Odette considers her uniquely dangerous, and why the demand that Odette enter the Earth dungeon is more than political convenience. On the Eighth Floor, Huanxin sponsors Eileithyia, a goddess associated with childbirth. Katia's Crown of the Sepsis Whore, her pregnancy-related condition, and her looming conflict with Donut make her vulnerable to a proposal. Huanxin offers a route that may preserve Katia and position her as a celestial attendant. She also wants Yemaya restored as a retainer, linking the bargain to Ascendancy preparation. The arrangement is never simple charity. Huanxin supplies objectives, including the recurring spider-killing requirement, and makes assistance contingent on Carl arranging for Odette to serve as the Princess Posse's faction adjutant. Carl withholds parts of this condition from Donut because he fears both Donut's reaction and the collapse of the deal. Katia's survival is thus tied to an outsider's revenge plan. Huanxin's leverage illustrates the difference between help and control. Her proposed solution may be real, but she chooses a form that advances several private aims at once. Odette advises Carl to force the issue by having Katia consume the orchid, reducing Huanxin's room to retreat from her promise. Huanxin wants Odette physically present as an adjutant during the Ninth Floor game. Adjutants are protected officials, yet their presence creates legal and tactical possibilities that do not exist outside the dungeon. Odette believes Huanxin intends to use those possibilities for revenge. She nevertheless develops a counterplan that may kill them both, connecting the private feud to the broader effort to undermine the crawl. This makes Huanxin an antagonist whose objectives overlap imperfectly with the protagonists'. She may support actions that keep Katia alive or weaken a common enemy, but agreement on one outcome does not create trust. Carl's dealings with her are exercises in constrained negotiation: he must extract the promised benefit without accepting Huanxin's framing of the entire problem. Mordecai remembers Huanxin as spoiled even when young; Odette describes her as intelligent, patient, and motivated by revenge. Her method is escalation through dependencies. Rather than issue a single threat, she creates a chain in which a quest, a cure, a sponsor selection, and an official appointment appear to require one another. Wealth lets her absorb failures that would ruin an ordinary participant. Her history also shows a deep intolerance of humiliation. The Dodola defeat cost her status more than money, and her later actions target the people responsible across extraordinary spans of time. The result is not impulsiveness but vindictive planning backed by institutional power.
