Chaco

Chaco is a former crawler champion, a level 66 Pterolykos Song Bard, and the host of the Prize Carousel. Billed as a giver of prizes and slayer of gods, he remains indentured long after his crawl. His history with Odette, Mordecai, Uzzi, and Huanxin Jinx makes him both a comic broadcast personality and a witness to an earlier Ascendency disaster. Chaco has a winged, wolf-headed Pterolykos body and the skills of a Song Bard. As Prize Carousel host, he delivers scripted excitement, displays rewards, and interacts with current crawlers while operating under contractual control. His celebrated champion image hides the limited freedom of a former contestant. Mordecai attacks Chaco with a chair when they meet, revealing a grudge rooted in Uzzi's death. During their old season, Odette broke or manipulated a deal with Huanxin Jinx, and Chaco killed Dodola before the Ascendency sequence was complete. Mordecai survived to descend, while his brother died. Chaco is neither the sole cause nor an uninvolved bystander. His act contributes to the chain that kills Uzzi, while Odette's ambition and Jinx's demands structure the trap. The surviving characters assign blame differently because each made decisions under unequal knowledge and pressure. Book 8 identifies the Eleventh Floor and Parade period as Chaco's last season before expected freedom. He struggles with or refuses parts of the required script. Because former crawlers cannot be possessed in the same manner as dungeon-born NPCs, the AI punishes his body directly. The AI tears off both wings, leaving Chaco bleeding and unconscious. Carl heals him despite the AI's objections. Chaco later stands wingless and then blinks away. No death notice follows, so he is alive but severely injured at the latest confirmation, with final release from indenture unresolved.
