Jamal is a seventeen-foot hammerhead shark who begins as one of Signet's flying paper tattoos and becomes a living, air-breathing NPC after Signet's death. He joins Carl's Faction Wars army, reaches level 72, and later remains with the Tenth Floor coalition using a custom spider-legged mobility harness. In tattoo form, Jamal can fly and serves Signet as a summoned or represented creature. Her death releases surviving tattoo figures into independent bodies. Jamal retains memories of being an apex predator and of consuming clowns, lemurs, and other enemies. The living Jamal has the anatomy of an oversized hammerhead shark but breathes air rather than water. He loses flight, useful smell, and easy movement on land. The change gives him independence while also leaving him dependent on allies for mobility. Carl builds a voice-controlled, eight-legged automaton harness, and Katia later improves the design to respond more naturally. Jamal repeatedly orders the legs to hop, breaking prototypes on landing. The final apparatus makes him resemble a shark-spider hybrid and allows battlefield movement. Jamal is formal, apologetic, enthusiastic, and prone to referring to himself in the third person. Donut calls the habit Elmo-ing and repeatedly corrects him. His persistent dream is to hop and feel wind in his gills, a comic wish rooted in the real loss of flight. Jamal fights in Faction Wars, reaches level 72, and remains one of the NPCs who choose to stay with Carl after the Zerzura and later crises. On the Tenth Floor he serves as a mercenary backup and reacts excitedly to divine events. Jamal is alive at the latest confirmed Book 8 appearance. He is not a pet owned by Carl or Donut, even though he relies on their engineering. He is an independent awakened NPC and coalition member.
