Chapter 31 of The Gate of the Feral Gods belongs to the battle with quan ch and completion of the orthrus quest sequence on the Fifth Floor. It combines a discrete survival problem with the evolving Gate, bubble, divine, and crawler-coordination storylines. Quan Ch continues attacking Orthrus for the prize while the puppy has only a fraction of its health. Carl and Donut are in a fragile biplane with limited aim, Emberus is approaching, and other crawlers below misunderstand the quest and also fire at the animal. Carl prepares Mordecai's potion and smoke device, while Donut fires missiles and the plane passes through Quan's shielded position. Explosives detonate inside the resulting concealment, injuring and disorienting him. Donut heals Orthrus, which renews the puppy's pursuit. Emberus appears as a level 250 locked god. Spells from crawlers below reduce Orthrus to unconsciousness, so Carl turns the plane into another rescue pass. Quan returns with both hands charged. Donut loses control, Carl uses Sticky Feet to climb onto the upper wing, and he throws a celestial grenade at Quan. The conflict destroys the aircraft and tears away Quan's arm. Carl and Donut land in another popped bubble as Orthrus survives and the group quest completes. Carl attacks another crawler without attempting a lethal finishing move, focusing on removing Quan from the puppy. He relies on aural, cloud, blunt-force, and explosive effects because Shield can resist direct magic. Donut prioritizes healing Orthrus even though that makes the creature chase them again. When the plane spirals, Carl chooses the celestial grenade as the only attack likely to break Quan's confidence and protection before impact. High-level Shield blocks many direct attacks but remains vulnerable to psionic, aural, cloud, stagger, and cumulative damage. Celestial equipment can grant flight and multiple unlisted abilities. Sticky Feet can prevent a crawler from being thrown from a moving surface. Completing a mandatory group quest distributes rewards to the participating population. Saving Orthrus creates direct divine recognition and visible marks of devotion on Carl's hands. Carl and Donut survive the crash in an unfamiliar popped bubble. Quan retreats to a stairwell missing an arm. Orthrus is alive, the quest is complete, and Emberus no longer threatens immediate destruction over the puppy. Carl receives glowing sun tattoos and new divine notifications. Donut tells him that his risk-taking is no longer merely eccentric but genuinely frightening. Carl becomes a devotee of Emberus and inherits long-term god quests. Quan becomes a personal enemy who carries the humiliation into later floors. The successful rescue proves that healing and control can satisfy a deadly quest more effectively than killing. Carl's separation from bubble 543 also forces the Gate rescue operation to continue without him physically supervising every transfer. Carl, Princess Donut, Quan Ch, Orthrus, Emberus, Mordecai through chat, Tran, unidentified crawlers in the lacuna, Mongo, and the System AI appear or communicate.
