The Sledge, usually called Sledge and affectionately called Sledgie by Donut, is a level 35 cretin rock-monster mercenary. He begins as a Desperado Club bodyguard and becomes a Royal Court minion, defensive specialist, transport operator, and protector of NPC children. Sledge and Bomo are hired as bodyguards for Carl and Donut. Sledge provides magical protection while Bomo specializes in physical shields and force. His large stone body and sparse speech make him appear intimidating, but his behavior toward Donut is gentle. He brushes her, lets her ride his shoulder, dances, and tolerates elaborate accessories. On later floors Sledge is registered as a Royal Court minion. Donut can make clockwork copies of properly assigned minions, turning his durable form into a decoy and assault tool. Mordecai often keeps the real Sledge in reserve because his unique spell is too valuable to risk in ordinary fights. Sledge and the other cretins become fascinated by Frogger and later draw on video-game imagery while operating vehicles. His rivalry with Bomo over scores gives him a life within the safe room beyond guarding doors. His short messages are literal, observant, and sometimes unexpectedly philosophical. During the Hunting Grounds campaign, Sledge helps move changelings, controls the Twister, and uses clockwork copies in traps. When mantises seize the aircraft, he jumps, keeps the controller, and attempts to crash it like a vehicle in Grand Theft Auto. He reports battlefield conditions in clipped updates while trying to protect Bonnie and Prudence's cubs. Prudence dies protecting two babies. Sledge remains with the cubs even when he believes he will be overwhelmed. Changelings disguised as mantises eventually clear a route. His message to Louis, that surviving is winning and everything else is bullshit, summarizes a practical ethic formed through repeated disasters. Sledge receives the Zerzura spell, a powerful transfer effect requiring a protected five-minute cast. At the end of Faction Wars he casts it for the coalition. He asks whether he made a difference, revealing that his concern is not status but whether his contracted existence changed anyone's outcome. Hired dungeon-born mercenaries do not continue automatically to the Twelfth Floor. When the contract expires, Sledge and the surviving cretins are expected to disappear into storage or return to the mercenary market. He says goodbye to Donut and hopes to see her and Bomo again. The removal is witnessed, but the destination is not. He is therefore not listed as dead.
