Psamathe

Psamathe is the true divine identity of Samantha, a lesser goddess and Withering Spirit whose essence becomes trapped in a damaged love-doll vessel. She was banished by her father after a relationship with an ancient king. Mrs. Ghazi's failed attempt to summon Yarilo helps bring Psamathe into the Earth dungeon, where she becomes one of Carl's most unpredictable allies. Psamathe is associated with sand, spirits, family conflict, and a forgotten divine history. Her father banishes her for a forbidden relationship. Accounts also connect her to a sand ooze familiar or daughter, though the exact family terminology is complicated by damaged memory and the way divine fragments are represented. Mrs. Ghazi attempts to summon Yarilo but is manipulated by the entity that becomes Samantha. Psamathe first occupies the ghost of Queen Quetzalcoatlus and later the Lika love-doll body. The improvised vessel allows her to move and speak while limiting the power and dignity expected of a goddess. Escape and summoning processes divide Psamathe's essence, leaving part in the doll and part elsewhere. The doll is eventually destroyed except for the head. Samantha continues as a talking, floating head with incomplete memories, demonstrating that physical destruction does not equal divine death. Samantha is not a separate mortal who merely resembles Psamathe. It is the name used by the same being in her current vessel and social circle. She is quick-tempered, sexual, intelligent, loyal in irregular ways, and repeatedly frustrated when others fail to recognize her divine status. Feral gods recognize or smell her true nature. Emberus later connects her to Geyrun's death quest, and Book 8 reveals additional family tragedy, including the death of her daughter and unstable recollection. Psamathe remains active as Samantha at the latest appearance; her full essence and ultimate divine role are unresolved.
