Chapter 3 of The Gate of the Feral Gods continues the Fifth Floor campaign in bubble 543. The chapter combines immediate survival work with new evidence about the bubble's overlapping castle stories. Its ending changes the party's next objective rather than functioning as an isolated encounter. The party needs allies, a path across the Air Quadrant, and information about the gnome hostage before the weather closes the travel window. Carl also has to determine whether scattered crawlers can contribute useful skills. The personal-space upgrades make commerce and food easier, but do not solve the immediate problem of aircraft attacking anyone who crosses the open desert. Carl, Donut, and Katia visit Hump Town's bars and meet Louis Santiago 2, Firas, Juice Box, and a six-man group of Finnish car salesmen who selected Archer. They move into the desert toward the Bactrian settlement, fight a heavily armored drop bear, and test clockwork Mongo replicas. A gnomish biplane drops explosive pods that fail to open correctly. More aircraft descend from the Wasteland, forcing the party to retreat before reaching the other town. Carl chooses to recruit imperfect allies rather than wait for an ideal team. He recognizes that the car dealers' pre-crawl sales experience and the specialists' spells may become useful even if their current combat level is low. Katia contributes mapping and transformation analysis. When the aircraft make a walking approach impossible, Carl abandons the route and decides to build a vehicle rather than sacrifice time to repeated bombing runs. The upgraded store functions like a marketplace and rewards Donut's commerce-related advantages. Changelings and doppelgangers are distinguished by how they copy bodies and abilities. Clockwork Mongo constructs can attack and test threats without exposing the living familiar. The failed gnome bombs show that enemy equipment can be dangerous, recoverable, and unreliable at the same time. The chapter ends with the party running from an approaching formation of gnomish vehicles. The Bactrian town remains unreached, the second dropped weapon is unresolved, and open-ground travel has become unsustainable. Carl states the next solution directly: they will build a dune buggy and cross the desert faster than the aircraft can contain them. The decision produces the Royal Chariot, one of the Fifth Floor's defining tools. Louis, Firas, Juice Box, and the archers enter the allied network. The inability to reach the Bactrians also means Carl does not learn their hostage arrangement before the settlement is destroyed, leaving Hump Town's collateral as the only immediate leverage against the Wasteland. Carl, Donut, Katia, Mordecai, Mongo, Louis, Firas, Juice Box, and the Finnish archers appear. The chapter introduces the upgraded market, Hump Town bar network, armored drop bear, gnomish biplanes, aerial bombs, and a broader view of the Wasteland's patrol doctrine.
