Volteeg is a Sturnus-born former crawler, gargoyle, seventh author of the Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook, and later employee of the Operatic Collective. He survives his original crawl through avoidance and an early Tenth Floor deal, spends years ashamed of that choice, and ultimately destroys the Weeper tank under his command during the Earth season's Faction Wars. His attack kills Warlord Hortense and more than ten thousand Blood Sultanate soldiers. Volteeg enters the dungeon as Mistress Henspar's pet bird. A pet biscuit gives him intelligence and speech, making his origin comparable in broad terms to Donut's while producing a very different life. On the Third Floor he selects the gargoyle race and the Tank Buttress class. He eventually reaches level 71. The change grants a body suited to defense, but it takes away his old ability to sing. Volteeg later identifies that loss as one of his deepest regrets. Volteeg remains devoted to Henspar and tries to protect her. She is killed on the Seventh Floor by scags using crossbows. His surviving Cookbook contribution is written after her death. It is not a tactical manual but an expression of despair, followed by a later response from Drakea. The contrast between his powerful defensive build and his inability to save the person he loved defines how he judges the rest of his crawl. During Faction Wars Volteeg hides instead of joining the fighting. On the Tenth Floor he accepts the first exit arrangement offered to him: twenty-six seasons as an unprotected NPC guard in Rampart's external combat guild. He completes the term without killing a crawler or participating in meaningful combat. Survival is real, but he regards it as cowardice rather than victory. Gargoyle magic does not function normally outside a dungeon, and the heavier gravity makes Volteeg's transformed body hazardous. He requires a brace and is eventually placed by an outreach guild on the Auditor General's compliance barge for the Operatic Banker’s Federation. He belongs to a group nicknamed the One-Offs, former crawlers whose unique bodies create long-term medical and employment problems. His friends include a wheelchair-using djinn and a former-human cave fairy. The Operatic Collective returns Volteeg to the dungeon as commander of a Weeper-class tank. The Pacifist Network and Porthus arrange for him to be treated as a refugee because he originally entered as a pet. That classification keeps him from being segregated with the Bone Clan. Porthus does not initially know that Volteeg wrote the seventh Cookbook edition. Rosetta recognizes the name, and Porthus tells Volteeg that it is not too late to act. Volteeg removes the Weeper's fire-control chamber, fills the vehicle with charged ammunition, and drives toward Hortense's army. He uses a blitz stick to ignite the load. The explosion destroys the tank, kills Volteeg, eliminates the Operatic Collective's second team, kills Hortense, and takes more than ten thousand enemy soldiers with it. The act does not erase Henspar's death or make his earlier withdrawal unreal. It gives his life a final direction chosen on his own terms. His story links pet transformation, inaccessible post-crawl care, the Cookbook, and Faction Wars in a single biography.
