The lacuna is the dark space between the bubble worlds of the Fifth Floor. It has a physical floor beneath the enclosed worlds, and an opened bubble can be reached from it without a portal. During the events of The Gate of the Feral Gods, its geography turns what initially appear to be isolated castle campaigns into a shared crisis. Crawlers use the space to travel between worlds, while gods and other immense creatures cross it and threaten worlds whose inhabitants have not yet escaped.
The space around the bubbles
The Fifth Floor places its crawlers in separate bubbles, each with four quadrants and four castle objectives. The barriers remain in place until the bubble's objectives are completed. Once a bubble opens, its occupants can see and enter the surrounding lacuna, and its stairwells become available. The lacuna does not itself provide a stairwell: a crawler still needs an open exit in one of the worlds. This distinction becomes critical when survivors from bubbles with unfinished castles are brought to Bubble 543, whose exits are already active.
Carl first examines the lacuna from the air while piloting a small aircraft out of Bubble 543. The bubbles are set into the surrounding terrain rather than suspended like separate balls in empty space. He compares their arrangement to depressions in an egg carton. At that point he cannot see the land below him, but judges it to be only a few hundred feet beneath the waterline of his former quadrant. The floor becomes unmistakable when Orthrus, a gigantic two-headed puppy, tumbles out of the bubble and lands on it instead of falling indefinitely.
The bubbles have room between them. On Carl and Donut's flight, two intact domes stand about a quarter mile apart at their widest point, giving the aircraft a passage but leaving much less room for Orthrus. Their surfaces are opaque from outside, although one glows through its shell. Later, Carl sees an opened world containing a giant cactus and another with a curved concrete structure. These sights establish that the lacuna exposes the different shapes and landscapes of neighboring worlds without making their still-sealed interiors freely accessible.
The view changes according to the bubble and the observer's height. From the edge of Bubble 543's damaged upper bowl, a nearby unopened bubble fills the horizon like a luminous curve. At ground level, Carl and Donut encounter darkness, low fog, damp air, and a shallow sheet of water. Even Donut's Torch spell does little to dispel the gloom. The ground on their return route appears flat, but the edge of the opened bubble stands above them; reaching the lacuna from its lower surface requires Carl to climb down and then fall the remaining distance.
Orthrus crosses into the open
Orthrus's escape provides the first direct test of the space beyond Bubble 543. The puppy has been released by the Gate of the Feral Gods and is too large for the enclosed world. Carl and Donut fly ahead of him, using an attraction spell to draw him away from the bubble and toward Emberus, the god searching for him. When Orthrus reaches the boundary, he rolls out and lands on the lacuna's floor. The immediate danger of his being trapped inside Bubble 543 ends, but his freedom exposes other worlds to his enormous body.
The pursuit passes both sealed and opened bubbles. Orthrus scrambles over intact domes, slips on them, and leaps onto the cactus world. His movements are playful, yet the worlds beneath him contain crawlers and structures. A floor-wide quest announcement reports that he has drenched Bubble 331 and knocked down the Sounder Tower in Bubble 298. Carl warns crawlers whose bubbles have opened to shelter in safe rooms. Outside a sealed world, the puppy can move across its surface; where a world is open, its remaining inhabitants are more directly exposed to him.
The same route attracts hostile crawlers. The System offers a reward for killing Orthrus before he reaches Emberus, even while a separate quest requires Carl's group to protect him and reunite him with the god. Quan Ch attacks from the air, and other crawlers fire spells from the floor of the lacuna. Carl can see the ground attackers below the aircraft as he struggles to keep the badly injured puppy alive. The open space therefore becomes a pursuit route for rescuers and hunters at the same time. Neither group is confined to its starting bubble once it can reach the shared terrain.
The end of the chase also depends on the lacuna's openness. Carl draws close enough to Emberus to summon him to the flight's location. Emberus recognizes Orthrus, and the two leave the floor together. Their reunion removes the god's mistaken focus on Bubble 18, where he had believed his son's puppy was trapped. It also ends the immediate danger of a huge, vulnerable animal moving among the Fifth Floor worlds while other crawlers try to collect the kill reward.
Movement between opened worlds
After the Orthrus crisis, Bubble 543 becomes a receiving point for a wider rescue. Many crawlers have taken some of the castles in their assigned worlds but cannot use a stairwell because another quadrant remains unconquered. Carl's group uses the Gate of the Feral Gods to transfer survivors into 543, where all four objectives have already fallen. The lacuna matters to this effort as the common exterior of the worlds, but it is not a universal bypass of the locked stairwell rule. A person who gets out of a failing bubble still needs a viable destination and an active descent route.
The gate transfers create dangers in that exterior. Each use may unleash a feral creature at one end and, under the original summoning behavior, draw a corresponding deity. Before the rescue begins, Carl expects that several feral gods may remain trapped inside bubbles while powerful gods roam the lacuna looking for them. Mordecai advises the crawlers to remain in safe rooms if a god enters their world and to wait for it to depart. The plan risks turning an effort to move survivors through open exits into an attack on other worlds that happen to lie along the gods' paths.
Some releases affect the terrain outside their bubbles. One summoned creature is too large for the world in which it appears and bursts apart inside it. After the remaining defenders die, that bubble opens and spills gore into the lacuna, spreading a stench across the area. In another world, a gigantic turkey survives its release, leaves its bubble, and later feeds on the remains of the exploded creature. A city-sized insect swarm also gets out near Bubble 801, although it remains around that distant area before dispersing. These creatures make the supposedly empty ground between bubbles an active hazard.
The surrounding worlds can themselves change conditions on the lacuna's floor. Li Na and Li Jun's bubble has a rising-water scenario; by the time they defeat its final castle, the world is submerged. When its barrier opens, water washes outward and reportedly kills crawlers already exploring the dark fog outside. The incident shows why opening a bubble is not always a harmless release of access. The contents of one enclosed world can spill into the shared space and injure people who had already left their own.
The dungeon later announces that the gate rescue may continue, while reducing some of the secondary divine summonings. The announcement explains that a released feral creature had originally carried a substantial chance of drawing a corresponding god, and that at least one possible god would have endangered the floor on a far larger scale. The change lowers one risk without making the lacuna safe. Carl later counts a turkey and the insect swarm among the feral beings released outside, as well as several other gods that cause damage before departing. He does not personally witness every one of those encounters, so their exact paths through the lacuna remain unknown to him.
Carl and Donut make a ground-level crossing after the second stage of the rescue. Rather than ask Louis and Firas to fly out to collect them, Carl chooses to preserve their craft for a later operation. He and Donut descend from the lip of an opened bubble into the fog, retrieve a chariot, and drive back to Bubble 543. Carl sees a few small red markers on his map, which Donut describes as ratlike creatures that keep their distance. His Ping spell finds no hidden god or unusual NPC in the immediate area. Janitor mobs are also working outside the bubbles. The short trip succeeds, but Carl treats it as a risky journey rather than a cleared road.
Other allies use the exterior to reach worlds needed for the final gate operation. Louis and Firas travel through the lacuna to Imani and Elle's bubble with Britney and a group of changelings. Some of the changelings fly alongside their transported house in bird forms. Their movement shows a different kind of crossing from Carl's chariot trip: they must locate a particular world at a distance and carry passengers there while dangerous beings remain abroad. The lacuna connects the bubbles physically, but finding and safely reaching a chosen one still requires transport and coordination.
The final disturbances
Near the end of the floor, Carl hears a distant screech that he associates with the feral creature released near Imani and Elle's emptied bubble. Another roar follows, along with flashes and impacts visible and audible across the darkness. Gideon later reports seeing two enormous beings fighting near his own world. One kills the other, but the fight strikes a separate bubble and breaks it open, releasing another creature. The lacuna allows a battle begun at one location to damage a different world's enclosure and send its occupant toward people who had no part in the original summoning.
The released creature is Slit, a feral demon searching for Samantha. She reaches the area of Bubble 543 and threatens Carl's group. Carl throws Samantha far into the lacuna to draw Slit away; the demon follows her through the open space. A much larger deity then appears and destroys Slit before either returns to the bubble. The encounter demonstrates the scale of the exterior: Carl can send Samantha many kilometers from the immediate fight, yet the resulting pursuit and divine intervention remain visible from his position. It also shows that removing a threat from the bubble's rim can shift a confrontation into the common space rather than end it.
Across these episodes, the lacuna serves as more than a gap between Fifth Floor levels. It is a traversable floor around distinct worlds, a place where released water and debris accumulate, and a route used by crawlers, aircraft, gods, and other creatures. Opening a bubble grants access to that route and to its own stairwells, while also exposing it to whatever is moving outside. Carl's successful return to Bubble 543 and the repeated attacks nearby show both sides of that change: the shared ground makes rescue across worlds possible, and it lets dangers from one world reach another.
