Orthrus is a two-headed puppy formerly owned by Geyrun, the murdered son of Emberus. The animal is trapped in the Nothing and later released during the Fifth Floor crisis. Returning Orthrus to Emberus becomes part of Carl's continuing divine quest. Orthrus is a young two-headed canine associated with a divine household. Despite the mythological name and unusual body, the narrative repeatedly frames the creature as a bereaved or displaced pet rather than a conventional boss. Geyrun, not Cerberus, is the confirmed owner. Orthrus spends an unknown period in the Nothing, a hostile space that contains banished gods, demons, and other entities. Time and memory do not function normally there. The experience leaves the puppy's recollections unreliable, limiting its ability to identify Geyrun's killers. The Gate of the Feral Gods opens pathways that allow entities to emerge from the Nothing. Orthrus is released near the end of the Fifth Floor sequence. The return is both a rescue and a new danger because openings from the Nothing rarely release only harmless beings. Carl's obligation to Emberus includes the murder mystery surrounding Geyrun. Returning the pet provides a surviving connection to the victim but does not solve the case. Orthrus's presence intensifies Emberus's grief and Carl's responsibility to avoid a false accusation. Orthrus survives release and is returned to the relevant divine network, but the later books do not provide a complete independent chronology. The animal should not be listed as deceased. Its final residence and recovery remain unresolved.
