The Larracos College of Magic is an educational complex on the fiftieth level of Larracos, the terraced city at the center of ninth-floor Faction Wars. Its towers rise through neighboring rings, while its grounds occupy a substantial portion of the upper city. The college remains inhabited after Larracos's earlier catastrophe and, during the war, becomes a route into the city for Carl's allies and a defended refuge for Team Retribution. The same professor's tower serves as a point of entry near the beginning of the conflict and a gathering point when fighting reaches the college gate.
Campus and place in the city
Carl first sees the campus clearly after leaving a guild saferoom through a tower near its center. The tower has pale, stone-like walls covered with flowering vines. Around it stand many towers of different colors, some extending upward past several city rings. Carl can see an observatory with a large telescope and a broader tower whose stained-glass roof marks it as a lecture hall, according to Louis. The tower containing the saferoom has professors' dormitories and a small cafeteria at the top. The cafeteria has a draconian proprietor; Carl passes through it on his way outside and does not identify it as a true saferoom. A spiral stair descends from there to the college courtyard.
The height of this entrance gives Carl a view beyond the campus. Homes and suburbs occupy rings beside the rising towers, and their residents can be seen from the stair. The college does not stand apart from Larracos's residential life: its tall structures overlook the surrounding neighborhoods, while its lower paths connect to the streets and the rest of the ring. At the main gate, a raised exit leads onto a narrow cobblestone street. Louis identifies the adjacent area as an arts district with theaters, restaurants, and shops. He also reports that performances have been canceled and that the shops there offer little of the equipment the crawlers need. These observations place the college among the city's cultural institutions rather than in an isolated military enclosure.
Carl describes the campus as occupying about a quarter of its ring; an explanation on the next leg of his journey characterizes level 50 as the college's district and says it occupies a third of the ring. Both descriptions establish its large scale, though they do not supply an exact surveyed boundary. The route out of the main gate leads away from that district and down through Larracos's other levels toward the castle at the bottom. Its high position later lets people on campus observe fighting across much of the funnel-shaped city. That visibility becomes a tactical advantage when the college is used as a defensive assembly point.
Survival of the institution
The college predates the present Faction Wars contest. Information Carl receives while examining War Leader Arief recounts how Semeru dwarves built Larracos as they dug downward, attracting scholars from elsewhere. After Scolopendra's devastating attack, the dwarves' population was reduced, but the great structures within the pit survived. The surviving Semeru became stewards of the largely empty city. Scholars eventually moved into the college again and found earlier research still intact. The account also says that the city's halls and museums remain standing. The college is thus part of the preserved city that later inhabitants reoccupied, rather than a temporary facility built for the current armies.
Arief's presence on the campus brings that history into the immediate war. He is a Semeru dwarf and commander of the Larracos Defense Force infantry. When Carl and Donut descend from the saferoom tower, Arief meets them at the foot of the stairs, recognizes them as allied warlords, and speaks for the city's NPC defenders. He says they want to discuss tactics with the crawlers and that Juice Box has asked to see Carl privately first. His role links the college's occupied grounds to the organized defense of Larracos. The people who preserve the city are now preparing to fight in it.
First arrivals and movement through the college
Louis and his companions reach the college before Carl takes his first extended walk through its grounds. Their entrance is delayed because guards require a visitor pass. The procedure is striking in a city about to become a battlefield: visitors still encounter a staffed gate and an institutional entry rule. It also keeps Louis near the college long enough to see Samantha pursuing Tish, a woman she blames in connection with Ghazi. Katia runs after Samantha and catches her before the guards can intervene. Katia reports that the college guards are sluggish under a Despondent debuff, but she still expects them to react to the disturbance.
The dispute has a specific connection to the institution. Carl remembers letters in which Ghazi, after discovering Samantha's deception, wrote to the college for help. The correspondence identified Tish as his former girlfriend and said that she still worked there. Samantha's hostility toward Tish therefore leads her directly to the college, although her accusation does not establish that Tish was responsible for Ghazi's choices. Katia's intervention prevents the attempted confrontation from becoming a fight with the campus guards. The episode shows that the college contains identifiable staff and records of contact with people outside the city, while the war has made an ordinary visit hazardous.
The saferoom linked to the professors' tower also matters to the crawlers' travel network. Louis receives a guild Airship Portal upgrade that allows suitable personal spaces to function as airports for a guild airship. The saferoom at the college qualifies. A ship docked there can be placed in a dimensional hangar and accessed through the portal; Louis notes that choosing its elevator from elsewhere would bring him back to the Larracos docking point. The college entrance therefore offers more than a door onto level 50. It can connect the upper city to the guild space and to airship operations, subject to the upgrade's rules.
Carl, Donut, Louis, and Britney later choose the college exit because it opens several rings above their previous route through Larracos. They intend to recruit other crawlers while traveling toward Katia's personal space and need to make physical contact to complete those enlistments. On the descent from the tower, Carl sees elves, draconians, fairies, and other NPCs moving among campus buildings. Their indicators mark them as soldiers of Team Retribution. The college is active with allied inhabitants even before its gate is attacked. The visitors then leave its courtyard with Arief, passing the guards and entering the city proper.
Preparations for fighting are visible from the campus stair. In neighboring residences, Carl sees a dwarf teaching a younger dwarf to use a sword and a bugbear repairing armor. Fairies work on another tower, placing a red jewel on top and causing it to light. These sights change Carl's understanding of the city: the inhabitants are not simply continuing normal routines while armies gather outside. They are preparing their own defenses. He contrasts this with the usual pattern of Faction Wars, in which Larracos suffers damage from spells, artillery, and gods before the surviving factions reach it. The college lies within that vulnerable urban area, and its residents have begun to take an active part in protecting it.
The college during the siege
Later, Carl uses the same saferoom route to return to the college with Rend, Jamal, Bigs, and survivors from Burcu's team. The exit again leads through the cafeteria in the professors' tower. By then the college is under siege. A location notice places Carl on its campus at city level 50 and warns that Larracos's defense towers are powering up. NPCs have kept control of the college grounds, but zarogoths are attacking at the front gate. The contrast with Carl's earlier descent is sharp: the flowered towers and busy courtyard are now a place where defenders gather under pressure, with smoke and fires visible below.
Carl examines a nearby red-jeweled city defense tower. It is an automatic weapon, upgraded for both range and firing speed, and is about to become operational. The tower stands beside the route he used on his first visit, where he saw fairies placing a jewel on another structure. The available account does not establish that these are the same tower. It does establish that the campus vicinity is tied to Larracos's active defense system. Activation creates a new hazard alongside the attacking monsters: Carl receives a warning that the city towers will target him. The defenders' need to hold the college therefore unfolds amid weapons that may threaten crawlers as well as attackers.
At the bottom of the tower stair, Carl finds Team Retribution members and a smaller number of crawlers crowded together. Semeru dwarves in ornate armor hold the front gate against zarogoths. When the gate opens, several of the creatures enter the courtyard. One dwarf is struck by a painful ray; another cuts open a zarogoth, draining the black liquid inside it. Donut fires a magic missile from her separate tower into the attackers, and the dwarves press forward. Carl learns that lower cuts make the creatures leak rapidly, a tactic the NPC fighters appear already to have adopted. The gate action is a direct defense of the campus, not merely a distant battle visible from it.
The college's gate also becomes a meeting point for allied commanders. Carl wants to reach a generator hidden elsewhere in Larracos and needs access to a railing from which he can attack it. Donut, positioned above the city, identifies its likely location at the Piccadilly Theater and is told to jump back to the college. While Carl is near the gate, a group of apparently monstrous figures enters the courtyard; their indicators reveal them as Team Retribution officers in changeling forms. Juice Box leads them, with Britney and Ferdinand among the group. She gives orders to clear the way and protect Carl as they move out toward the generator. The campus thus serves as a defended staging point from which the allies attempt to address a threat beyond its walls.
Holding the college becomes harder as the siege develops. Britney later tells Carl that the defenders have had to retreat back into it after the city towers activate. Other allies remain there while a raid against the castle is prepared. Lava entering Larracos is redirected through the upper funnel and begins to fill its levels; Carl recognizes that it will reach level 50 and force the defenders sheltering at the college to move. The campus can resist a direct rush at its gate, but it cannot remain a permanent refuge against a rising environmental danger. Its last described role in these preparations is as a place where Jamal, Britney, and others wait for the coordinated move against the castle.
The college's importance during Faction Wars comes from those connected uses. Its surviving academic buildings house a populated district; its saferoom and airship access connect that district to the crawlers' routes; its tower and courtyard allow allies to assemble above the rest of the city; and its gate gives Larracos's NPC defenders a position to hold. The siege transforms an institution maintained by generations of inhabitants into a contested part of the city they are trying to save.
