La Iglesia de los Olvidados is the ruined temple at the center of the corrupted ghommid settlement called Pueblo de los Olvidados on the eighth floor. Its exterior resembles a Club Vanquisher entrance, but its interior initially contains seven broken shrines to members of an old divine family. Asojano, the former god whose presence has driven the settlement's inhabitants into a hostile state, leads Carl's group there so that the Santero Paz can restore his shrine. The chamber instead becomes the site of a celestial thorn-room choice: only one shrine can be restored with the Sun of Reawakening. Carl's group defeats Asojano and restores Yemaya's shrine, curing the surviving ghommids and transforming the building into the Temple of Yemaya, a functioning Club Vanquisher entrance.
The temple inside the settlement
Carl, Princess Donut, Paz, Anton, and Sister Ines first encounter the settlement as a fog-filled cemetery within the Havana area. From outside its fence, Donut sees many moving creatures but cannot see inside the church at its center. Carl identifies the central spire as belonging to a Club Vanquisher. The presence of a saferoom and other town facilities also leads him to suspect that the enclosure is more than a conventional boss arena. Crossing its gate confirms that it is a medium ghommid settlement suffering from corruption. The gate then locks, a barrier prevents escape by air, and the party receives the compulsory Pueblo de los Olvidados quest. The temple is therefore both the obvious landmark within the settlement and the place the trapped crawlers must eventually reach to resolve its condition.
The creatures filling the cemetery are the settlement's ghommid residents, altered into dangerous, unsettled forms. Paz's Santero class aggravates them, causing them to focus their attacks on him. This makes the route to the church especially difficult for the group escorting him. The quest identifies the source of the sickness as a spirit that has entered the town; it says removing that source may cure the populace. When Asojano later appears in the saferoom, the quest clarifies that he is the source. The former god used the remaining power of his shrine to enter the settlement and became trapped there. His presence has changed the residents' minds, and the quest directs the party to find and repair the correct shrine in the central temple or remove him.
Asojano calls on Paz to repair his shrine, saying that doing so will give him enough power to leave. He proposes a nighttime crossing, when he will be stronger and better able to hold the ghommids back. He also warns that the infected residents will be stronger after dark. The party cannot assume that restoring him will be safe: Sister Ines worries that a more powerful Asojano could turn on them, and Carl and Mordecai plan for a fight. Asojano's proposal nevertheless provides a route toward the building that is central to both his demand and the settlement's quest.
The crossing and the ruined interior
For the crossing, Carl prepares an area stun bomb meant for noncorporeal enemies and equips Bomo with a suit carrying smaller stun and anti-undead missiles. The plan is to disable enough ghommids to run through the cemetery while leaving as many residents alive as possible to be cured. Asojano clears a narrow route toward the temple, but the ghommids close in as soon as the party leaves the saferoom. Their nighttime speed and eerie cries complicate the run. Paz is struck by a Terrified effect and cannot move until Bomo carries him. Carl's bomb and Bomo's missiles open gaps in the crowd, though some ghommids resist the stun.
The church comes into view as an octagonal yellow building with a damaged door hanging from one hinge. A particularly dangerous ghommid attacks the party at the entrance. Carl uses a flag to turn it into a card and is thrown backward across the threshold by the collision. Only then does the dungeon identify the interior as La Iglesia de los Olvidados. The combat notification resets as he enters, marking the church as a distinct space from the battle outside.
The building is badly decayed. A hole in the roof admits moonlight; the former vestibule has collapsed into the main room; mud and moss cover the tile; and the wooden ceiling is rotten and moldy. Asojano stands at the rear over his ruined shrine. He says he has cast a temporary spell that keeps the ghommids outside and that he is stronger within the temple. The barrier buys the group time to inspect the chamber, but it will not settle the conflict over which shrine to restore.
Seven broken shrines occupy alcoves around the room, one against each wall other than the entrance. Asojano begins a ritual beside his own monument, and a small, hot, floating object appears in the center. He calls it the Sun of Reawakening and orders the others not to touch it before Paz repairs his shrine. Its later appearance makes clear that it is a glowing, skull-shaped gem. The room's arrangement matters because the Sun can activate only one of the seven monuments; the choice of recipient, rather than the mere act of repairing rubble, determines what happens to the temple and its occupants.
Paz and Anton receive a conflicting instruction from Ogun, the god they worship. He orders them to restore his broken anvil shrine instead of Asojano's and threatens a smite if they fail. This pits Asojano's proposed cure against the worshippers' obligation to Ogun. Anton starts to handle a piece of the anvil. At that point the chamber's dormant conflict becomes an active battle, and Asojano accuses the group of betrayal.
The seven-shrine choice
As the confrontation begins, Oshun appears as an ethereal figure and urges the crawlers to restore her shrine instead. Her presence exerts a powerful charm on Carl and Anton. Carl breaks a finger to disrupt his own response; Anton remains drawn toward her. Katia then sends Carl an urgent private message telling him to repair the blue shrine of Yemaya. She says Yemaya's return is necessary to save both her and Donut from a danger connected to the Crown of the Sepsis Whore. Carl receives this warning while the other occupants are still struggling over Ogun's and Oshun's shrines. It gives him a reason to choose a shrine neither Asojano nor Ogun wants restored.
The room freezes and the dungeon identifies it as a Celestial Thorn Room. The announcement sets out the rule: there are seven shrines, one Sun of Reawakening, and only one can be fixed. Each choice offers a different outcome. Ogun's shrine would spare his two worshippers the threatened smite but provide no further benefit. Legba offers a chance to avoid future smites and a spell; Shango offers a lightning spell; Oshun offers protection from fatal blows, a charisma increase, and healing. Inle's shrine offers resistance to health-draining conditions and increased Constitution. Asojano's restoration would end the settlement quest and cure the ghommids, but he would not reascend. Refusing him means fighting the city boss and losing the chamber's protection from the ghommids. Yemaya's restoration would return her to the Halls and bring gifts from her and her friend Eileithyia.
Those alternatives make the church more than a room with several interchangeable altars. The threatened smite gives Paz and Anton a strong reason to favor Ogun, even while Asojano demands his own restoration and the other spirits tempt the group with immediate rewards. Carl chooses Yemaya because of Katia's warning about Donut and the Crown. The choice carries an immediate cost for Ogun's worshippers, which Carl understands before he acts. It also leaves Asojano hostile and the entrance exposed to the infected ghommids. The novel presents this as a forced choice with competing consequences, rather than a way to save everyone present through a single repair.
Battle for Yemaya's shrine
When the room unfreezes, Anton tries to reach Oshun's shrine. In the struggle, he throws a piece of Ogun's shrine through the damaged doorway and outside, making that repair harder while ghommids crowd the entrance. Donut strips the specially prepared armor from Bomo with Laundry Day, scattering metal pieces and daggers across the chamber. She then casts Legionnaires of the Damned, sending spirits into the recently worn pieces. The resulting swarm attacks the noncorporeal Asojano. Carl assigns Bomo to fit together the few blue pieces of Yemaya's shrine while the others try to contain the boss and the creatures pressing through the door.
The competing shrines continue to affect the fight. Legba urges Paz to repair his monument, promising protection from Ogun's punishment. Oshun attempts to draw Anton back and offers to heal his injured hand. Inle also addresses Carl. Paz and Anton begin assembling Legba's shrine, despite Carl's calls to choose Yemaya. Carl blocks the damaged entrance with a blessed metal chock, slowing the ghommids. Asojano's shield is battered by Donut's animated metal, and his health begins falling. Carl observes that separating him from the ghommids appears to weaken him, as had happened earlier when Asojano was shut inside the saferoom.
Asojano's attack sends green material into Paz and Anton and leaves both with a dangerous, persistent condition that Sister Ines cannot heal. It also destroys most of Donut's animated armor. Bomo finishes assembling Yemaya's small obelisk while a few possessed daggers remain active. Carl turns the dying Asojano into a card with a flag, but the contact infects him with SlugPox. The remaining daggers then carry the Sun of Reawakening to the rebuilt shrine. When the gem touches it, the room freezes again and the battle ends.
Restoration and consequences
Yemaya's activation physically remakes La Iglesia de los Olvidados. The broken roof closes, the damaged entrance becomes an intact door, and the muddy floor turns clean with blue channels and fountains. The other shrines and their ghostly claimants vanish. Outside, the surviving ghommids regain their senses. The quest announces that Pueblo de los Olvidados has been liberated, that its survivors are cured, and that the party may leave. The dungeon then identifies the transformed building as the Club Vanquisher Entrance Temple, the Temple of Yemaya, and announces Yemaya's reascension. The change of name accompanies a change of function: the ruined church has become the restored goddess's temple and an accessible Club Vanquisher entrance.
The cure does not remove the dangers created by the shrine choice. Paz and Anton continue to suffer from the condition Asojano inflicted, and a mark shows that Ogun has shunned them. Carl's SlugPox produces increasingly dangerous slugs, prompting a search for healing within Club Vanquisher. Ogun appears in the new temple to punish his worshippers for allowing Yemaya to return. He kills Anton and leaves Paz with a condition that cannot be healed through the ordinary means available to the group. Sister Ines confronts him, while Carl's attempt to protect Anton fails. These events follow directly from choosing Yemaya over Ogun's shrine and give the completed settlement quest a severe personal cost.
Yemaya subsequently appears from one of the fountains, joined by Eileithyia. Within her own temple, Yemaya can acknowledge those who restored her shrine and give gifts. She singles out Bomo for physically rebuilding it. A cured ghommid later enters and recognizes her, showing that the building now serves living residents of the freed settlement as well as visiting crawlers. Its final state contrasts with the abandoned chamber Carl first entered: the altar that survives belongs to a returned goddess, the town outside is no longer corrupted, and the entrance to Club Vanquisher is open.
