Kiwi is an ursine woman who is transformed into a Mongoliensis pack leader before the events of the sixth floor. She is the mother of Big Tina and, after encountering Princess Donut's pet Mongo, the mother of Mongo's twin daughters. Kiwi first appears in dinosaur form as a dangerous but intelligent territorial leader. Her story subsequently reveals that the dungeon's monsters may retain relationships, desires, and fragments of identity from lives they had before being altered. Restored to her ursine body during the Butcher's Masquerade, she later joins Donut and Carl's ninth-floor forces as a cook, civilian organizer, and protective parent.
Life before the transformation
Kiwi was originally an ursine. She and her daughter Tina belonged to a community of bear-like people before Scolopendra's nine-tier attack changed them. Tina was a timid child whose father was a cleric. Kiwi initially treated her daughter as a reflection of herself, but changed her outlook after discovering Tina's love of dance. She resolved to help Tina pursue that interest and prepared for a recital that became a defining event in their lives. The exact events of the recital are not retold in full when their history is disclosed, but its aftermath is clear: Scolopendra's attack transformed Tina into a huge allosaurus and Kiwi into a Mongoliensis.
The transformation damaged both identity and memory. Tina retains only a limited understanding of her former life and follows an instinctive desire to dance and to recover her mother. Kiwi is more functional and remains fiercely protective of Tina, yet cannot simply explain their relationship while she lacks speech. A group of female Mongoliensis follows Kiwi, and the pack in turn watches over Tina. This arrangement preserves the old family relationship in altered form even though Tina does not consciously recognize the scarred raptor as her mother.
Mongoliensis pack leader
Carl and Donut first meet Kiwi on the sixth floor after Mongo is drawn into the jungle by a group of Mongoliensis. Kiwi is identified by the dungeon as a level-60 Mongoliensis Pack Leader. She is larger and more experienced than Mongo, with pink-and-blue feathers, a jagged facial scar, a missing left eye, a battered beak, and long claws. Her all-female pack consists of lower-level Mongoliensis, most of them between levels 30 and 45. The dungeon's description also notes that dinosaur-class monsters were not present in the region before Scolopendra's attack, providing Carl with an early clue that the dinosaurs are transformed inhabitants rather than a natural population.
Kiwi's first confrontation with Mongo establishes both her power and her authority. Her call inflicts the Deer in the Headlight-ed condition, immobilizing Carl's legs for fifteen seconds. Mongo answers her call, and the two leap at each other, but the apparent attack becomes a mating encounter. The remainder of Kiwi's pack holds back rather than challenging its leader. Afterward, the pack's map markers become non-hostile to Donut while Kiwi remains hostile to Carl, and the dinosaurs withdraw into the jungle. Their different reactions show that Kiwi is responding to specific members of the party rather than behaving as an indiscriminate mob.
Kiwi reappears at the edge of later encounters without attacking. Carl and Donut gradually learn that the much larger Big Tina is her daughter and that Kiwi's pack has been trying to contain Tina's increasingly destructive behavior. Tina's vampirism and violent rampage make that task impossible. Prudence identifies Kiwi by name and explains that Tina's mother still tries to limit the damage, while evidence found at an ursine massacre connects the pink-feathered pack leader to Tina's movements. The developing quest is therefore not merely a hunt for an uncontrolled dinosaur: it is a problem involving a mother who can no longer communicate with her transformed child.
Alliance with Princess Donut
After Tina is cured of vampirism, Kiwi and approximately three dozen Mongoliensis surround Carl, Donut, and Prepotente. Donut uses a specially prepared Charm Mongoliensis potion on Kiwi. The effect makes Kiwi Donut's minion for the rest of the floor, while the pack follows because of Kiwi's existing leadership rather than through separate magical bonds. Carl recognizes the practical distinction: Donut directly controls one pack leader, not an entire collection of tamed pets. If Kiwi were lost, the other dinosaurs could immediately become hostile again.
The charm does not erase Kiwi's temperament or priorities. She remains suspicious of Carl and repeatedly tries to lead the party east toward Tina. When Donut takes another route, Kiwi sends most of her pack ahead to protect her daughter. She also establishes a possessive relationship with Mongo, driving away another female that approaches him. Donut's commands can redirect Kiwi, but the raptor continues to act on her own attachments whenever supervision relaxes.
Kiwi quickly becomes one of Donut's most formidable combat assets. She is faster and stronger than Mongo and attacks threats in the forest before the others can react. She climbs trees with him while Donut serves as a spotter against an Odious Creeper, patrols around the party, and helps protect them while they travel. When the high elves' delegation strikes Mongo with lightning, Kiwi attacks the shielded mount carrying Ferdinand and is badly burned. Donut heals both dinosaurs with Heal Critter. The attack strengthens the connection between Kiwi and Donut's group by placing Kiwi among the companions targeted through Donut's personal relationships.
Her intelligence is most apparent in her management of Tina and the other raptors. Kiwi can call the pack away, order it between Tina and potential victims, and make individual dinosaurs abandon an attack. When several raptors fall on the hunter Iota, Kiwi responds to Donut's order and forces them back. She then reprimands Tina strongly enough to reduce the giant allosaurus to a frustrated tantrum. During a later raid, Kiwi keeps Tina outside the fighting area while she and Mongo intercept two hunters who are leading explosive automatons toward the crawlers. These actions make her more than a powerful minion: she functions as a field leader whose authority solves problems that Donut's charm cannot address directly.
The Recital and restoration
Tina's quest, The Recital, offers two broad outcomes: kill the rampaging allosaurus or give her what she truly wants. Donut concludes that Tina needs a dance recital, while Signet supplies the missing insight. Tina's deepest desire is not simply to perform but to have her mother back. Kiwi has remained beside her throughout the floor, but Tina's impaired mind cannot recognize the Mongoliensis as the ursine woman she remembers.
Donut incorporates Kiwi and the pack into Tina's performance at the Butcher's Masquerade. Kiwi appears with Mongo and roughly thirty other raptors as sea-themed backup dancers, wearing a costume of white paper bubbles. The absurd costume has a tactical purpose: one of its bubbles conceals an I Take It All Back potion. When the fighting begins, Donut sends the raptors against the hunters. Kiwi and Mongo attack Vrah together, tearing off her limbs and leaving her mortally wounded. Before Mongo finishes Vrah, Kiwi briefly presses her head against his in a gesture Carl understands as a farewell, then obeys his instruction to return to the stage.
Donut breaks the hidden potion over Kiwi just as Tina returns to the stage. Kiwi immediately changes from a raptor into her original ursine form. The loss of the pack leader's monster status turns the other Mongoliensis hostile again, but the transformation completes the quest's real objective. Tina recognizes Kiwi and calls her mother. The Recital is marked complete even though Tina remains an allosaurus, confirming that the necessary restoration was Kiwi's identity rather than Tina's body.
Kiwi is transferred with Tina, the changelings, Signet's former tattoo warriors, and the damaged high-elf castle when the structure is moved to the ninth floor. The remaining Mongoliensis do not transfer. Without Kiwi's leadership or Donut's indirect control through her, they revert to hostile mobs during the sixth-floor collapse. Kiwi's departure therefore ends her role as Donut's magically bound minion while preserving the more important relationship recovered between mother and daughter.
Life in the ninth-floor army
When Carl, Donut, and their allies reach the ninth floor, they find Kiwi living at the Fortress of Unyielding Power and Authority. She is once again a one-eyed, heavily scarred ursine and is visibly near the end of a pregnancy caused by her earlier mating with Mongo. Her personality is markedly different from the aggressive pack leader Carl remembers. She is soft-spoken and cautious, spends much of her time cooking for the army, and wears an apron over her pregnant belly. On seeing Mongo again, she hugs him, then calmly takes Tina inside to help prepare dinner.
Kiwi's restored personality does not remove her willingness to oppose the warlords when Tina is at risk. During the ninth-floor fighting, Carl orders Tina into battle but Kiwi refuses, pointing out that Tina is a child and that Carl has already barred the gnome and changeling children from combat. Carl privately accepts that her objection is justified and decides the choice belongs to Kiwi, although Donut overrides her and orders Tina out. After the battle, Kiwi attempts to bring Tina back inside while the allosaurus ignores her. The episode presents Kiwi as one of the few people prepared to challenge the army's use of a uniquely powerful child.
Kiwi remains involved in camp life rather than serving as a front-line combatant in her ursine body. She cooks for the troops and styles Samantha's hair into victory rolls before a major operation. Mongo repeatedly seeks her out in the kitchens, though she swats him away when his attention becomes intrusive. Her domestic work is not a return to passivity: it is the practical labor of sustaining the mixed crawler and non-crawler force while she also supervises Tina and prepares to give birth.
Birth of the Ursensus twins
Near the destruction of the ninth floor, Kiwi's water breaks while she is trying to arrange Tina's return to the fortress. She enters active labor in Bucket Boy's clinic and specifically asks for Mongo. Edgar explains that ursine tradition treats the father's presence as a source of strength for newborns. Mongo is confused and hesitant, but stays beside Kiwi while Imani uses soothing magic and the others assist with the delivery.
Kiwi gives birth to twin daughters. The newborns are neither ursine nor Mongoliensis. They have four legs, small wing stubs, wet brown fur, beaks, and heads with distinctly Mongo-like features. The dungeon classifies each as a level-zero female Ursensus and a legendary creature: a new hybrid produced from raptor, bear, and Scolopendra magic. Their intelligence makes them ineligible to become pets. Kiwi's response is entirely maternal; exhausted after the delivery, she holds both crying children against her chest while the surrounding allies celebrate their birth.
At the final evacuation, Kiwi chooses to accompany the children and other non-crawler dependents to the twelfth floor. Tina stays over her mother and the twins as they wait to transfer, while Mongo examines the babies before remaining with Donut and Carl. Kiwi, Tina, and the newborns then disappear with the group bound for the twelfth floor. Her destination is therefore separate from that of the crawlers descending to the tenth floor: Kiwi accepts the risk of the deeper transfer so that she can remain with her children rather than enter the next war zone.
Family and leadership
Kiwi's central relationship is with Tina. Even in dinosaur form, her strategic choices revolve around finding, restraining, and protecting her daughter. Restoring Kiwi allows Tina to recover the word “mother” and completes the quest without killing her. On the ninth floor, Kiwi again defines Tina as a child rather than a weapon, creating direct tension with the military needs of Carl and Donut's faction.
Her relationship with Mongo begins as an instinctive encounter between two Mongoliensis, becomes a battlefield partnership, and later produces the Ursensus twins. The two fight in tandem against hunters and share a silent farewell before Kiwi's restoration. Once she is ursine again, their bond is affectionate but no longer resembles their behavior as dinosaurs. Mongo recognizes and seeks her out, attends the twins' birth, and reacts with distress when Kiwi and the children transfer away.
Kiwi's two forms also reveal complementary kinds of leadership. As a Mongoliensis, she controls a dangerous pack through calls, physical dominance, and coordinated action. As an ursine, she leads through care, work, and moral authority, feeding an army and defending children's right not to be treated as expendable resources. Neither role is an invention of Donut's charm. Both continue the promise Kiwi made before Scolopendra's attack: Tina's life belongs to Tina, and her mother's responsibility is to help her survive long enough to choose it.
