The First Floor boss routes followed by Carl and Princess Donut begin as local fights for survival and end at a stairwell sealed behind the Ball of Swine. Their encounters with the Hoarder, the Goblin War Chieftain, and the Juicer take place in separate neighborhoods; none of those victories opens a descent. The final borough-boss route is different: it forces them to cross a changing maze, defeat the boss and its surviving components, and then bring the people waiting outside to the stairs before the floor collapses. These are the routes the pair actually travel, rather than a complete map of every First Floor boss.

Neighborhood lairs and the search area

In the part of the First Floor Carl explores, broad main corridors border large square sectors. Twisting interior passages divide a sector into four neighborhoods. The Hoarder's territory lies southeast within one such square, the goblins occupy the section to its west, and the bad llamas live across a main corridor. This layout gives a neighborhood boss a territory, but it does not make the boss chamber a required passage toward the next floor. Carl and Donut can cross the sector borders, seek supplies, and choose whether to enter a visible lair.

Mordecai identifies neighborhood bosses as the most common and easiest bosses to locate. He distinguishes them from borough and city bosses, the stronger ranks present on the early floors. A neighborhood boss leaves a persistent map that any crawler can collect from its body; the crawlers credited with the kill also receive a Bronze Boss Box and a star beside their names. The map is useful because it reveals a local patch of the minimap, including threats and facilities, but it does not show a route across the entire floor.

That limited reward shapes Carl and Donut's decisions. Their first neighborhood victory illuminates roughly a square mile, while the exit network contains only 75,000 stairwells across a much larger dungeon. The pair can become better equipped and better informed without becoming appreciably closer to a stair. A boss route is therefore sometimes a detour with immediate rewards, not a shortcut to the next level.

The Hoarder's chamber

The Hoarder is Carl and Donut's first neighborhood boss. She appears as a level-seven garbage troll in a room full of refuse, guarded by large cockroach-like offspring. Carl's improvised explosive attack badly injures her before the formal encounter begins. When the battle presentation starts, the system freezes the scene long enough to display the opponents and name the boss. The announcement makes a desperate fight into a staged event, even though Carl has already changed its starting conditions.

The Hoarder can still produce minions while wounded. Carl fights the insects at close range and then finishes her. Her final words and tears make the encounter more disturbing than the combat display suggests: the figure in the chamber retains something recognizably human. The victory teaches Carl the boss-room format, but it also leaves him with the memory of killing a frightened woman. Later, footage of the encounter is replayed to an audience that laughs at what he experienced as horror.

The Hoarder's body drops a Neighborhood Map. When Carl touches it, the nearby area fills in on his minimap, exposing remaining enemies, tutorial guilds, and a crawler's corpse. He and Donut use that information to reach Mordecai. The reward is practical reconnaissance rather than a newly unlocked gate. Mordecai subsequently explains that the fight had a specific vulnerability: interrupting the emerging insects could have choked the Hoarder. Carl did not know this during the battle, but the lesson becomes relevant when he must plan against a much stronger boss.

The goblin workshop and sealed chieftain room

The goblin neighborhood offers a different approach to a lair. Carl and Donut find an organized workshop with engineers, shamankas, vehicles, and stores of powder and tools. They are able to talk and trade with goblins there, including Rory, who arranges a human-sized chopper with a sidecar. The war chieftain's chamber lies beyond a door at the rear of this working space. Reaching it is not simply a matter of fighting down a corridor; the pair first learn what the surrounding community can build and what lies immediately outside the boss room.

After the goblins abandon the workshop, Carl strips it of useful supplies and constructs an explosive cart. He loads barrels with powder and metal fragments, adds a stronger explosive and magical triggers, and plans to send the cart through the chieftain's doorway. Donut will open and close the door while Carl gives the cart momentum; they will retreat behind several walls before detonating it. This plan follows from the Hoarder fight but avoids being locked inside a chamber with an unknown opponent. Carl also intends to flee on the chopper if the explosion fails.

The detonation kills the neighborhood boss and gives both crawlers another bronze star. It also destroys the workshop and kills goblin noncombatants in the room, including children. Carl learns what was inside only after committing to an attack from outside. The result exposes a severe cost of the remote route: the very method that shields the crawlers prevents them from seeing whom else they are targeting. The ruined, burning approach also blocks access to the boss's body, so Carl leaves without collecting its Neighborhood Map. The fight produces a credited victory but denies him the reconnaissance he expected from it.

The Juicer's gym

Carl and Donut's next detailed neighborhood-boss encounter takes place in a gym. Its door closes behind them, and the arena contains both the level-nine Juicer and troglodyte support creatures. Bashers work among the machines, while Virtuosos threaten Donut with poisonous tongue attacks. Unlike the chieftain bombing, this route commits the pair to a fight inside the room. The arena's weights and equipment are both cover and weapons: the Juicer throws heavy objects hard enough to smash machinery and wound the crawlers with fragments.

Carl uses Confusing Fog scrolls to disrupt the supporting troglodytes while Donut attacks the Juicer with Magic Missiles. The fog gives the pair only a short interval, and the boss remains dangerous after Donut has spent much of her mana. Carl uses gym weights against him, but the Juicer catches and crushes him when the fight seems nearly decided. Donut closes in and bites into the boss's neck, exposing the vulnerability that helps end the encounter. The apparent joke in the Juicer's bodybuilding design does not make him harmless; his strength nearly kills Carl.

In their subsequent discussion, Mordecai connects this fight to earlier observations. Carl had damaged a bad llama by attacking its throat. Donut's bite reached the Juicer through a vulnerable vein. Mordecai also identifies the missed weakness in the Hoarder's insect attack. The connection is more useful than the boss rewards alone: an arena may disclose how its enemy moves, attacks, and can be hurt. Carl carries that lesson into the borough route, where an ordinary contest of strength would be far less promising.

Finding the borough stair

Carl and Donut travel a long distance on the goblin chopper without finding an ordinary stairwell. Their search eventually reaches fresh directions painted on the walls, pointing toward both stairs and other crawlers. A second warning says that a safe path leads to the gathered group but that going deeper into the circular maze will activate a borough boss. The minimap marks a stair toward the maze's center. From outside, Carl can hear and briefly glimpse a large, fast creature moving through the enclosed rings.

The people waiting by the route are from the Meadow Lark eldercare facility. Brandon and Chris Andrews, Yolanda Martinez, and Imani C. can fight, but most of the remaining group consists of vulnerable residents. Brandon explains that police officers and firefighters previously entered the maze and disappeared after its gates closed. Other crawlers went looking for an easier stair and were killed. His guide, Mistress Tiatha, had said that borough and city bosses on the early floors have stairwells, while additional stairs exist elsewhere. This particular boss is guarding a known exit; it does not prove that every First Floor descent requires a boss fight.

Carl first considers using another bomb without entering. The maze defeats that approach. Its smaller gates do not offer a workable opening for pushing an explosive through, and the creature does not enter the outer courtyard. Once the main gate closes, the party inside cannot even communicate with the people outside through party chat. The alternative is to abandon Meadow Lark and continue searching for a different stair, but Carl and Donut have already traveled for hours to find this one. With the collapse clock running, Carl accepts the fight rather than leave the residents with no established route down.

Building the Speedbump

Before entering, Carl consults Mordecai, who advises seeking another stair. He cannot identify the boss for Carl in advance without violating his guide restrictions, but he reminds him to read the clues provided by the encounter. Carl has seen enough of the moving shape to recognize a rolling body that nearly fills its tunnel and does not lose speed at sharp turns. A plain wall would likely fail. He plans instead to wedge the creature between an angled structure and the ceiling, leaving the crawlers protected underneath and close enough to attack.

The group spends hours assembling a portable fortification Brandon calls the Speedbump. Carl's salvaged goblin tools and tables combine with equipment taken from the gym. The sections can be carried in inventories and rapidly joined inside the arena. Brandon and Chris contribute their maintenance skills; Imani and Yolanda have defined parts in placing and bracing the structure. Carl also fixes fragile enchanted shuriken to a sloping front panel and makes spike strips for the boss's path. The design depends on preparation outside the lair as much as fighting ability inside it.

Carl, Donut, Brandon, Chris, Yolanda, and Imani enter the maze together. Agatha follows despite the group's objections, bringing her shopping cart and taking up space they had not allowed for. The gate closes, the borough-boss presentation begins, and the moving creature is identified as the level-fifteen Ball of Swine. It is a magical formation of Tuskling knights and courtesans. The arena's walls rise and shift as the group moves inward, so the route they scouted is not a fixed corridor. They have to find an unbroken patch of ground large enough for the Speedbump while the ball circles closer to the central stair.

The spike strips injure the ball but do not stop it. The team assembles the Speedbump just before impact. Its sloped front catches the rolling formation against the tunnel roof, as Carl hoped, but the force throws out braces and begins crushing the structure. Agatha's unexpected presence has already prevented them from installing a central support. From beneath the failing roof, the crawlers stab upward until the ball bursts apart. The enclosure collapses around them, and the formation's individual Tusklings fall into the chamber still alive.

The opened stairwell

The fight continues after the rolling boss has broken. Carl and the others kill the disoriented knights and courtesans while protecting their wounded companions. Brandon crushes the last survivor, a Tuskling Dominatrix, with his hammer. Only then does the system declare the group the winner. Their success is not the clean execution of Carl's original plan: the fortification fails, Yolanda is hurt, and the second phase requires close combat among its wreckage. All seven crawlers who entered survive.

The borough boss leaves a persistent item that adds information about monster types in nearby quadrants, while the credited crawlers receive boss rewards and experience. More immediately, the red barrier around the stairwell falls. Chris goes to tell the people waiting outside that they can come through. Carl and Donut consider whether to continue separately, but the residents' need for help carries into the descent. The route's decisive result is access for the larger Meadow Lark group, not simply another boss mark beside the fighters' names.

The First Floor thus gives Carl three distinct experiences of a boss lair. The Hoarder yields a local map and a lesson he understands only afterward. The remote strike on the chieftain kills its target while concealing the people caught in the blast and making its map inaccessible. The Juicer forces a direct fight that teaches Carl to identify an enemy's weak point. At the borough maze, those lessons become part of an improvised evacuation: knowledge of the monster's movement, scavenged materials from earlier routes, and the workers' skills combine to open the one stair Carl and Donut have found in time.
