Firas M. was an Earth crawler, a Hammersmith, and one of the principal operators of the flying house known as the Twister. He entered Carl and Donut's wider alliance during the Fifth Floor, initially relying on escape magic and avoiding direct combat alongside his best friend, Louis. Over the remainder of that floor, he became a more capable fighter, pilot, installer, and field operator. On the Sixth Floor he continued serving in Katia's coalition, supported airborne attacks and crawler rescues, and qualified for the Butcher's Masquerade. He died in the battle against Queen Imogen after Britney redirected Imogen's lightning away from the larger group.
Background and crawler build
Before the collapse, Firas worked as a car detailer and audio installer in the United States. He was approximately twenty-five when Carl first met him. Carl described him as tall and thin, with an angular face and olive skin. His displayed name was Firas M.; the novels do not supply his full surname. His technical employment did not translate into a formally named engineering or pilot class. Instead, he was a level-22 Hammersmith when introduced.
The Hammersmith was a melee class centered on hammer weapons and related abilities. Firas's equipment was poorly matched to it at first: his only weapon was an intelligence-enhanced mace intended for a cleric. His most important early ability was therefore not a Hammersmith attack but Puddle Jumper, a short-range group teleportation spell. He had raised it to level 10 by the time he joined Carl, substantially above Donut's level in the same spell. The ability had a five-hour cooldown, making its use a tactical commitment rather than a routine convenience.
Firas had survived the earlier floors with Louis by combining Puddle Jumper with Louis's Cloud of Exhaust. Louis could disable or obstruct groups of enemies with his cloud, and Firas could remove the pair from danger if the tactic failed. They sometimes attacked affected monsters, but their usual method was to escape instead of completing difficult fights. That strategy kept them alive through the Third and Fourth Floors, including the Iron Tangle, but left them underleveled and inexperienced compared with more aggressive crawlers.
Joining the Fifth Floor alliance
Carl, Donut, and Katia found Firas and Louis in the Spit and Swallow, a saferoom bar in Hump Town. Both men were heavily intoxicated and had paid little attention to the Fifth Floor's bubble-world mechanics. Their condition made them liabilities during the effort to unite the local crawlers, and their first meeting with Carl's group was marked by confusion rather than competence. Firas did, however, explain the paired spell strategy that had brought him and Louis so far.
Mordecai gave both men an anti-alcohol potion. The cure was violently unpleasant, but it revealed a significant difference in Firas's behavior. Sober, he became quiet and introspective, in contrast with his earlier interruptions and Louis's continuing jokes. Carl still regarded both men as frightened and ill-prepared, yet Firas's Puddle Jumper immediately made him useful to a plan for entering the dromedarians' town hall.
Firas teleported Carl, Donut, Louis, and himself onto a second-floor balcony while Katia watched the exterior. Using his spell for entry allowed Donut to reserve her own cast for an emergency withdrawal. Once inside, the group discovered changelings hidden among the dromedarian guards and barricaded themselves in an office. Firas helped hold the barricade while Carl searched below, and he remained with the operation even as the guards tried to force their way through the door.
The escape went badly. An explosive struck the metal obstruction that had protected the room, setting the building on fire and throwing Firas across it. He was rendered unconscious, although the barrier prevented the blast from killing him. Donut used a healing scroll on him, and Louis dragged him through Donut's exit spell while the building burned. Carl later sent both men to a saferoom. Their health and levels had improved, but their shock demonstrated how little their earlier avoidance strategy had prepared them for sustained combat.
Firas nevertheless continued participating in Carl's plans. During negotiations with the gnomes, he sat behind the town leader Henrik in the rear of Louis's chariot. On Carl's private order, Firas cut Henrik's throat so the crawlers could remove the collateral that allowed the gnomes to threaten Hump Town. He froze after the first strike, staring at the knife, and required another direct instruction to finish the killing. The moment showed both his willingness to follow a necessary but brutal plan and his lack of Carl's growing familiarity with violence.
He then took part in the missile ambush against the gnomish aircraft. Firas, Louis, and the surviving Finnish archers each carried launch tubes and fired the hastily built rockets at assigned aerial targets. He also joined the lower-risk work of grinding, searching the ruined settlement, and completing the quest to obtain shelter material. By the time Carl encountered him again later on the floor, Firas had risen from level 22 to level 30 and carried himself with noticeably greater confidence.
The Twister
Firas and Louis found their most important role after Katia's group learned to fly the uprooted suburban house. Katia credited the controller Carl had left with Louis as essential to operating it, and she sent the pair to retrieve Carl and Donut after their absence from the main bubble. Firas and Louis learned to adjust the house's altitude until the balloon caught air currents moving in the desired direction. Their control was imprecise compared with a conventional aircraft, but they became skilled enough to earn several flying achievements and to serve as the coalition's regular pilots.
The Twister required constant physical work as well as navigation. Firas and Louis secured the captured gnomish Drop Bear aircraft, Nightmare II, inside the house's damaged garage. They restrained the plane for flight and helped repair or stabilize the house when storms tore at its structure. After the land quadrant's broken water system began flooding the area, the pair went directly to work on the damaged main rather than waiting for Carl to organize them.
Firas also installed weapons and delivered precise operational reports. Before the assault on the water quadrant's necropolis, he confirmed that the chum bombs were ready, that barrel launchers for the depth charges had been fitted, and that Carl could load them. He simultaneously tracked the remaining daylight and the approach of the equinox storm. During the attack, he and Louis maneuvered the house over the submarine's position, released the depth charges on Carl's order, and withdrew toward safety before the larger plan escalated.
His reports reflected knowledge gained through repeated flights. He warned Carl about the land quadrant's rotating sandstorm, increased lightning, lengthening darkness, and the behavior of feral creatures after exposure to the Nothing. When the bubble began breaking apart, he reported the loss of an entire section while he and Louis tried to keep the Twister airborne in violent weather. The two men were found climbing over the structure and working on it even as debris fell and the mission around them approached collapse.
The pilots' most dangerous Fifth Floor assignment came during the effort to move the changelings to the next level. Firas and Louis flew the Twister through the lacuna separating bubble worlds, located the correct destination, and ferried a large group of changelings toward the portal site. Some passengers had to transform into geese and glide beside the overcrowded house. Because crawlers could not use the portal to skip directly between floors, Firas and Louis sent the Twister through without themselves, entered the Sixth Floor by a normal stairwell, and recovered the craft afterward. Firas's final message before the transition thanked Carl and Donut and assured Katia that he would see her soon.
Sixth Floor operations
Firas joined Katia's expanded field group on the Hunting Grounds. The coalition included Louis, Britney, Bautista, Florin, Gwen, Tran, members of Meadow Lark, and other allied crawlers. The personalities frequently clashed—Katia reported that Gwen repeatedly wanted to kill Firas and Louis—but the group continued coordinating raids, quests, and rescue work. Firas and Louis recovered the Twister from the changeling refugees early in the floor and restored it as the coalition's mobile platform.
His progression continued even though his basic class did not change. At level 35 he remained a Hammersmith and had not received a specialization. Carl gave him a cloak from a loot box because it granted hammer-based attack skills that better matched his class. By a later strategy meeting he had reached level 42, almost twice the level at which Carl had first encountered him. His place at number 43 in the crawler rankings ultimately qualified him to attend the Masquerade.
Firas's work remained a mixture of combat support, observation, and vehicle operation. He and Louis directed an allied raid from the air while Katia's party searched a druid town for Eva. He helped Britney fill the blood meter required by her class and later fought an Odious Creeper with the larger group. After the level-173 monster fell, his immediate report emphasized the danger of its long-range thorns and the damage they had done to the Twister's garden. During an assault on a hunter-controlled temple, he piloted the armed house into position, offered to bomb the structure, and withdrew when the appearance of the god Diwata forced Carl to abort the attack.
The Twister's usefulness on the Sixth Floor was constrained by the low ceiling and dense forest. Firas explained that the balloon could not rise above the trees in much of the region. The house nevertheless carried shields and enough explosives to destroy a settlement, served as an aerial command post, and provided a firing platform for Bonnie's ballista. Firas's practical understanding of those limits was as important as his willingness to fly it. He did not present the craft as more capable than it was, and he repeatedly supplied Carl with direct answers about height, timing, weather, or readiness.
Connections within the coalition
Louis was Firas's closest and most enduring relationship. The two were introduced together, shared their survival strategy, operated the Twister as a team, and were rarely assigned separately. The Eye of the Bedlam Bride explicitly identifies Firas as Louis's best friend. The novels do not label their bond as romantic, and Louis's developing relationship with Juice Box remained central to his plans. Firas had asked Katia to make a pair of matching tuxedos, an unfinished request remembered after his death.
Firas also became closely connected to Britney. Donut jokingly called Britney his girlfriend, which Britney immediately denied, but later scenes show her sitting on his lap, embracing him after a frightening confrontation, working with him in the field, and accepting his persuasion to attend the Masquerade as Donut's assistant. The text establishes affection and reliance without defining their relationship more precisely. His patience with her also brought Britney into more of the coalition's shared activities after the destruction of her original Fifth Floor group.
Within the broader alliance, Firas increasingly behaved as a dependable subordinate rather than the confused crawler Carl had met in Hump Town. When Louis was occupied during the Masquerade, Carl asked Firas to guide Samantha through the castle by chat, and Firas accepted without argument. He also noticed that the guards remained calm despite fighting inside and outside the structure, an observation that helped frame how protected the castle's interior appeared to be. These were small contributions compared with Carl's central plans, but they show why the group trusted him with time-sensitive tasks.
Death at the Butcher's Masquerade
During the Masquerade, Firas assisted with communications while Louis and the changelings fought to preserve the Twister. As the protected event collapsed into battle, he remained near Louis and the other allies. The decisive danger came from Queen Imogen, whose lightning attack intensified while her health fell. Carl saw Firas and Louis lying beside one another, both unconscious but still alive, before the attack reached its final stage.
Britney used her coat's butterfly-like movement to attract and redirect the lightning. Her action kept the strike from destroying the larger group, but she suffered severe burns and the redirected attack killed Firas. The outcome was not discovered until after Imogen's defeat: Louis was still unconscious when Donut confirmed Firas's death, while Britney's healed face remained scarred. Donut regarded Firas as the hardest of the battle's many personal losses, and Katia remembered him as sweet while thinking about the matching tuxedos he had requested.
Firas's death continued to affect the survivors on the Seventh Floor. Louis and Britney were both described as broken up by the loss; Britney sat crying and clutching Louis, while Louis sounded outwardly normal but emotionally hollow. Juice Box reacted with sadness when Donut informed her. Later, the dungeon produced a Firas totem card. It was never summoned, but merely seeing it drove Britney into hysterics and left Louis sobbing again.
Louis eventually commemorated him through another aircraft. Firas had once proposed Party Planner as the name for the Twister, and Louis had dismissed the suggestion as stupid. When Louis later acquired a new flying vehicle, he used Party Planner after all. His visible sadness when explaining the choice made the name a memorial to the friend whose piloting and technical work had helped keep the coalition moving through two floors.
