The Gate of the Feral Gods is a portal device made from a winding box and two linked watches. A user sets a destination by turning a watch to a time associated with a place, arms the box, and removes the watches to open a passage. Its transport function has a second, inseparable consequence: an opening remains at the departure point and admits a creature from the Nothing. On the Fifth Floor, Carl and Katia turn the device into a route out of sealed bubbles, but each rescue exposes the surrounding floor to that consequence. Later use on the Ninth Floor shows that a prepared Gate can also be activated by an accident, while its box can serve as the basis for a more enduring breach.

The pieces and the destination code

The Gate's three essential pieces are divided among rival seekers in Bubble 543. The Mad Dune Mage, Ghazi, has the winding box; the remaining pieces are watches. The box contains two circular seats and controls for winding the mechanism. Its visible form suggests a clockwork instrument, but its operation depends on a magical link between the watches and on locations encoded as times. Possessing the box alone does not give Carl the ordinary transport function. That distinction matters when he acquires Ghazi's box and one watch but must still seek the second watch aboard the Akula.

Ghazi's research note describes the destination setting without explaining why a given time represents a given place. Turning one watch to the chosen time causes the other to mirror it. The notation is therefore a location code, not an appointment for the portal to open at that hour. Ghazi records several combinations despite not having a complete set of components. His list gives Katia usable destinations and a basis for interpreting the device, but it is not a complete map of everywhere the Gate can reach. The underlying conversion between clock readings and geography remains unexplained in his account.

Katia finds a separate diagnostic use while Carl has only the box and one watch. A watch placed in the second seat, with the lid closed, moves to a reading corresponding to its present position. She records readings at known places and begins comparing them. This makes the incomplete Gate useful as a rough locator and helps her estimate a destination setting. She also observes a relationship between the reading and a location's distance from Earth's sea level. That observation improves her practical calculations; it does not establish a universal formula for every destination.

Ghazi's recorded settings appear to cluster around Larracos on the Ninth Floor. A destination may therefore be outside the current floor's normal walking space. Mordecai warns Carl and Katia that opening a passage to a deeper floor would not grant crawlers permission to cross it: the dungeon's restriction against skipping floors still applies. The distinction between opening a portal and being allowed through it prevents the Gate from functioning as an unrestricted shortcut to later levels. An unusable destination would still leave its dangerous departure-side opening behind.

Arming and opening a passage

For ordinary transport, the user selects a destination, puts both watches into the winding box, and starts the winding process. The second watch then advances away from the matching reading until it reaches the time associated with the box's current location. Its alarm marks the armed state. The wait can be brief for a nearby destination or last up to a full turn of the watch for a more distant one. Moving the box during this preparation resets the process. Once armed, removing the watches opens the passage.

The transport portal runs in one direction from the place where the box was opened toward the selected destination. Ghazi estimates that it remains available for about twenty minutes unless the box and watches are taken through it sooner. Taking the components through closes the destination-side exit. The time limit makes a prepared passage useful for moving a group, but it also forces the group to assemble, choose a setting, and act before the exit shuts. Carrying the components across is a way to end the transport phase early; it does not undo what has opened behind the travelers.

The opening left at the origin changes into a two-way connection with the Nothing. Ghazi's note says it stays open until something comes out. He expects a creature to emerge quickly, often a feral god, and warns that its power can cause extensive destruction. The Gate thus trades a known journey for an uncertain release at the departure point. The same activation can deliver crawlers to safety and expose people who never used the portal to a threat they cannot choose or control.

Ghazi's diagrams consider different placements of the watches and box after passage. Katia notices one arrangement, with a watch on each side and the box inside the portal, that appears to prevent an emergence from the Nothing, but would sacrifice the box. It is a reading of his diagram, not a demonstrated rescue procedure in the Fifth Floor operation. The diagrams nevertheless show that the fate of the components affects what follows an opening; their placement cannot be treated as an irrelevant detail once the travelers have crossed.

The box has another use that does not require completing the normal destination cycle. Ghazi writes that opening its lid, winding it, and directing charged energy into it can create a passage straight to the Nothing. He used that method while seeking Yarilo and became entangled with Psamathe and her familiar. This direct opening is distinct from the watch-guided route between known places. It makes the box itself dangerous even when the transport configuration is incomplete or no travel destination has been selected.

Ghazi also warns that proximity to the open passage can affect people of weak constitution with feral madness. This is his warning, rather than a quantified rule Carl measures in the Fifth Floor experiment. Mordecai stresses another difference from an ordinary divine summons: what escapes through the Gate is the imprisoned being in its true form, without the usual summoning time limit. The size or strength of the arrival cannot be inferred from a conventional summoned version. Some potential arrivals may be larger than a bubble, which makes opening the Gate in an enclosed world especially hazardous.

The Akula escape and its aftermath

Carl's first use of the complete device is an emergency aboard the submerged Akula. After obtaining the second watch from Henrik's body, he has all three pieces while the damaged vessel is under attack. Katia's recorded readings let him select a spot near the pazuzu town of Pandinus rather than dial blindly. He chooses a short trip because the arming interval should be only seconds, although the box is being prepared in a room that may soon fail. The decision is a test of the Gate's transport mechanism under pressure, not a controlled trial of its side effects.

The portal carries Carl's group out of the submarine and also pulls water through with them. Its physical opening is large enough for more than the intended travelers, so a destination can receive material from the point of departure. The successful escape confirms Katia's practical reading of the time code and Ghazi's basic operating sequence. It does not make the activation safe. Carl had feared that a feral being released into Bubble 543 would be trapped with its crawlers until the fourth castle fell; he proceeded because remaining aboard the Akula offered no viable escape.

The released being is Orthrus, a two-headed dog formerly held in the Nothing. Emberus, searching for Orthrus, moves through bubbles that have already opened and devastates inhabited areas. The still sealed wall of Bubble 543 delays his direct arrival there, but it does not contain the consequences of the Gate's use within the submarine or even within Carl's bubble. Samantha identifies Orthrus's relationship to Emberus, explaining why one breach draws another powerful figure into the crisis. The sequence illustrates a second layer of risk: the creature that emerges may trigger responses from gods who were never present at the portal.

Moving crawlers between Fifth Floor bubbles

Bubble 543 becomes a receiving point after its four castles are taken and its stairwells open. Other bubbles still have survivors but cannot necessarily complete the same condition before the floor collapses. The Gate can move those crawlers across the walls dividing the Fifth Floor's isolated worlds. Its passage does not open the receiving stairwells by itself; the plan works because Bubble 543 already has usable exits. Without that destination, transport between bubbles would merely move people into another trap.

The rescue plan has a practical delivery rule. A carrier must be able to reach a Desperado Club and bring the Gate into the bubble needing help. The group can feasibly make only one opening per bubble. Survivors must therefore be together in one quadrant before the carrier activates it. A bubble with people scattered behind other quadrant boundaries cannot be emptied by a single passage. Nor can the rescuers assume that an unverified quadrant contains no one: the opening to the Nothing would be left in a closed bubble with anyone who missed the evacuation.

Imani makes that danger an eligibility condition. She refuses to help open a route while any survivor may be left behind, and uncertain population reports are held for later assessment. Elle helps question crawlers seeking rescue and identifies false accounts of who remains in their quadrants. The restriction is part of operating the Gate responsibly, not a property that the artifact enforces. Its mechanism will open whether the rescuers have counted everyone or not; the crawlers have to supply the safety rule themselves.

The rescue proceeds in phases. The initial eligible group contains only eight bubbles and a little more than five hundred crawlers; later additions bring the total saved to about 1,500. Access failures still exclude some groups. A destroyed entry pub can remove access to a Desperado Club, while Club Vanquisher is closed for repairs during part of the operation. Other bubbles go silent before they can be evaluated. The Gate's range is therefore broader than the rescue network's reach: knowing a destination exists does not put the artifact into the hands of people able to deploy it.

Administrative intervention changes the risk profile without removing it. A floor announcement allows the evacuation method to continue after legal and Syndicate involvement, while reducing the chance that a Gate opening will also summon an active god. It explicitly leaves the feral-god release in place. Across the rescue operation, feral beings emerge into the lacuna, including an enormous turkey and a swarm associated with Bubble 801; other divine arrivals cause damage before leaving. The ruling permits a life-saving use of the device while preserving the cost attached to each opening.

Later activation and a lasting breach

On the Ninth Floor, Carl's allies again use the Gate as a prepared transport route. Elle reports that the armed winding box is knocked over, the watches fall out, and the portal activates before she intends it to. Her warning gives the others roughly twenty minutes to use the opening. This accident confirms that an armed Gate depends on the watches' removal, regardless of whether the removal is deliberate. Preparation creates a vulnerability as well as an opportunity: a disturbance can start the clock while the intended travelers are still elsewhere.

The Nothing-side consequence also becomes part of Carl's Ninth Floor battle plan. His group hopes that Samantha's presence near an opening will draw an enemy connected to her, allowing its pursuit to disrupt another force. Carl recognizes that this is only a guess about what will emerge. The result defeats that expectation when the feral god Yarilo enters the realm instead. The Gate can be placed and timed, but the travelers do not command the identity or allegiance of what answers its other opening.

By the end of the Ninth Floor conflict, the winding box has been broken and used to make a permanent portal into the Nothing. Justice Light positions a trap above that opening and drops two other traps into it. Their effects connect the Nothing with additional realms, and the system announces that the Nothing has broken and is draining elsewhere. This is a different use of the box from Ghazi's timed travel sequence, but it follows the same central danger: the instrument can join places whose separation had contained powerful beings and forces. Its final breach shows that the Gate's consequences extend beyond any single journey or twenty-minute transport window.
