Crawlers are the registered contestants of Dungeon Crawler World. During the Earth season, the term most often refers to human survivors who enter one of the stairwells opened after the collapse of the planet's manufactured structures. Registration gives them an interface, inventory, statistics, achievements, and access to the rules of the dungeon, but it also places them inside a lethal entertainment product operated by Borant and watched across the Syndicate. When the World Dungeon begins, the collapse kills people inside or beneath manufactured structures. Survivors outdoors receive a limited opportunity to enter through newly opened stairwells. Entry is presented as voluntary, but the destroyed surface, severe weather, lack of shelter, and absence of ordinary infrastructure make that choice coercive. A person who descends becomes a crawler and is assigned a number in the live population count. Registration is not limited to ordinary adult humans. Princess Donut becomes a crawler after an Enhanced Pet Biscuit changes her intelligence and the system recognizes her as a contestant. The event shows that crawler status is an administrative designation rather than a biological species. Later transformations alter race, size, anatomy, and apparent age while leaving the contestant's identity and legal position intact. Crawlers perceive system messages, descriptions, maps, chat, health, mana, debuffs, and inventory controls through a private interface. The presentation resembles a role-playing game, but injury and death are real. Basic attributes quantify capacities such as strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom, and charisma. Skills improve through use, while spells consume mana or operate under cooldowns and conditions. Descriptions frequently contain jokes, insults, or deliberately incomplete explanations written by the System AI. They are still important evidence. Carl survives by reading wording literally, testing boundaries, and asking what a rule fails to prohibit. The method differs from blindly following prompts. It assumes that the system has internal consistency even when its personality is hostile or erratic. Race and class selection occurs after the introductory stages and produces the first major specialization of the surviving population. Choices can change bodies permanently and unlock abilities, equipment, or social restrictions. Carl becomes a Primal with the Compensated Anarchist class. Donut remains a cat and chooses Former Child Actor. Other crawlers become elemental, undead, monstrous, or hybrid forms. The selection process is a strategic trap as well as an opportunity. Guides may omit crucial consequences, as demonstrated when Dmitri Popov's choice of nodling merges him with his brother Maxim. Some options are designed to be entertaining rather than safe. Managers can explain historical patterns, but they cannot guarantee how a new planetary AI will interpret a build. A party is a formal interface group that enables shared information and coordinated benefits. Party membership does not encompass every alliance. Carl and Donut work with Team Meadow Lark, the Popov brothers, Florin, Li Na, Lucia Mar, and many others through chat networks, temporary squads, guild structures, and negotiated coalitions. Conversely, people can share a party while distrusting one another. Communication is one of the crawlers' most important resources. Private chat, group chat, maps, scouts, recap viewing, and face-to-face councils allow information to move between builds. The Iron Tangle makes this obvious because solving the floor requires many parties to coordinate routes and trains. Later, shared intelligence lets crawlers hunt the hunters and organize Faction Wars at army scale. Crawlers must reach a stairwell before each floor's deadline. Failure, combat damage, environmental hazards, quests, and producer events can all cause death. Safe rooms suspend most direct violence, but protection ends at the threshold. Healing and resurrection effects exist, yet they are limited and should not be mistaken for a general reversal of death. Not every exit is a death. The Popov brothers transform into infants after receiving fatal damage at the Butcher's Masquerade and are ejected from the game alive. Deals can remove a crawler into indenture, and floor-specific prizes may create other forms of exit. The distinction matters because the broadcast often presents removal as the end of a story even when the person continues to live outside the dungeon. The surviving population develops customs under extreme pressure. Crawlers exchange warnings, commemorate the dead, argue about recap story, and learn the reputations of high-ranked contestants before meeting them. Team names and slogans create belonging. Public brands may begin as producer jokes and later become genuine political identities, as with the Princess Posse. Community is not automatic. Scarcity, killer markers, bounties, manipulated quests, and unequal access to information encourage suspicion. Some crawlers prey on other contestants. Others build rescue systems and accept danger to assist strangers. The Earth season's most important change is the growth of institutions capable of preserving cooperation beyond a single emergency. Early tutorials teach crawlers to regard NPCs as services or quest pieces. Carl's experience with Mordecai, Meadow Lark, Signet, Juice Box, and many settlement residents overturns that assumption. NPCs possess memories, loyalties, families, and the capacity to resist their scripts. Cooperative crawlers increasingly treat them as political partners. Outside the dungeon, crawlers encounter hosts, sponsors, former contestants, hunters, governments, and fan communities. These groups possess different legal privileges but all attempt to influence the season. The crawler population begins as the object of that competition and gradually becomes an actor capable of shaping it.
