Ballroom A is the crawler guests’ chamber at the Butcher’s Masquerade in Queen Imogen’s high elf castle on the Sixth Floor. It appears to hold crawlers, hunters, performers, and the queen in one gathering, but the castle’s goodwill ballroom system places those groups in separate rooms and overlays their images. Ballroom A occupies the fourth floor; the hunters’ Ballroom B is on the second, and Imogen’s private ballroom is on the seventh. The separation initially makes the masquerade a protected social encounter. It also shapes the assault on the castle: the crawlers must contend with a peace seal, restricted magic, and a stage that connects to rooms below before they can fight the hunters and Imogen.
Place in the castle
The castle contains two main guest ballrooms and two attendant ballrooms, with a control chamber on the third floor. The attendant rooms stand on opposite sides of the first floor. Each of the four linked chambers has a small soul crystal in the control center; a larger fifth crystal governs the overlay that lets participants perceive and interact with people in other rooms. Edgar’s map gives Carl’s group the locations before they arrive. The map matters because a disruption of the control room could change the protections on which both the party and the crawlers’ plans depend.
Ballroom A is well above its associated attendant room. Its guests enter an opulent hall with a tiled floor, a broad dance area, tables, a buffet, and a large curtained stage. A string ensemble appears to be playing for the guests, although Carl has seen the musicians setting up in a servant ballroom downstairs. A prize counter stands opposite the stage. The room is therefore both a physical venue for the crawlers and a presentation layer through which activity elsewhere in the castle can be seen and heard.
The main rooms do not share all of their contents. Some fixtures, including tables, chairs, doors, and a warning light, are present across the linked iterations and move together. Other objects belong to only one ballroom. Food is separated by marked trays: Ballroom A’s guests are directed to gold trays, while black trays serve Ballroom B. Carl’s planning notes describe the wider color coding as a way to tell which apparent objects can actually be handled. This distinction has practical consequences for anyone trying to use a displayed object, cross a room boundary, or read the state of the ballroom’s security system.
The stage has a special connection to the attendant ballrooms. A performer in Ballroom A can interact with items placed on an attendant stage while the items themselves remain several floors away. Donut can, for example, use a wand or read a scroll brought to that lower stage, but she cannot drink a potion merely because its image is available to her. Animals and attendants housed below can likewise be presented to the audience above. The stage permits limited performance magic and necessary weapons, yet its users cannot freely attack spectators. Carl’s group studies those exceptions because Donut’s act, the animals, and equipment prepared downstairs all depend on them.
Imogen’s private ballroom is farther away and normally barred to visitors. The central stairwell reaches only the fifth floor, leaving the queen’s seventh-floor rooms inaccessible by the obvious route. Carl judges that confronting her while she remains in her own protected chamber would leave his side vulnerable even if Ballroom A’s magic and inventory restrictions were lifted. This makes the queen’s eventual appearance at the party a crucial part of any confrontation. The castle layout gives her a protected position while forcing her guests to navigate rules they do not control.
The peace seal
The footman Theobold explains the party’s formal protections during the journey to the castle. Guests may not brandish weapons or cast ordinary magic in the ballroom, and magical storage is unavailable. The protection applies only within a guest’s designated chamber. Opposing guests seem close enough to argue with, but they occupy different physical locations; Theobold says a blow across that division would have little effect. Queen Imogen’s guards and additional defenses stand behind the public truce.
On entering Ballroom A, Carl receives system notices that he has been muted and peace-bonded. The room’s protection seal threatens banishment to the Nothing for violence. Invited guests also cannot leave until the party concludes or the seal breaks. A ceiling light flashes as the first entrants activate the ballroom and flashes again when the second guest room comes into use. It is meant to reveal changes in the system’s armed state to the guards. Once the host arrives, the party chambers are sealed from outside influence as well. Carl and Imani realize that this restriction will also keep Imogen inside after she joins the gathering.
Imogen had already warned Carl that the masquerade is a ritual whose successful completion would bring her a boon from Apito. She says the goddess selects a guest list likely to produce discord and that the host must carry the evening through without violence. The seal therefore protects the crawlers from immediate attacks while frustrating Carl’s initial plan against the queen. Carl tells his allies they cannot safely make the first violent move. He keeps the outside infiltration in motion, but the party within Ballroom A becomes a contest over who can preserve or break the seal and under what circumstances.
These protections do not remove hostility among people in the same chamber. Vrah approaches Carl almost as soon as the hunters’ images begin to appear. They trade threats, and Carl tries to provoke her without attacking. Katia’s presence near Eva and Florin’s approach to Lucia Mar create other flashpoints. Carl, Imani, and Elle try to stop a crawler from striking another crawler and triggering the seal. The room’s apparent peace rests partly on enemies choosing, or being persuaded, to restrain themselves.
Britney quietly disables the warning light while Carl occupies Vrah. A summoned butterfly moves to the ceiling fixture and dims it before returning to its stuffed-animal form. The maneuver concerns the signal that guards would otherwise receive when the ballroom’s protections change. It does not by itself end the seal. Vrah later notices the darkened light, showing that the alteration could also alert an observant guest.
Guests, contests, and the stage
The crawlers gather near the stage while the hunters tend to cluster by the buffet, despite their visible presence in the same apparent hall. Theobald announces a schedule of pet presentations, talent performances, and dancing. Three off-world judges sit at a raised table before the stage. Empress D’Nadia is among them. Chaco operates the prize counter, where Carl can spend the hunter hands he has collected; purchases are delivered as prize boxes that he cannot open in the sealed ballroom, while upgrades can take effect immediately. The counter gives the party a second purpose for the crawlers even before the performances begin.
The pet show demonstrates how the stage joins Ballroom A to its attendant space. A crawler presents a stone hawk, and Prepotente brings Bianca, whose passage leaves the stage scorched. Donut then presents Mongo in an elaborate musical routine. Mongo is physically downstairs while Donut performs above, but the audience sees them together onstage. Smoke and amplified music fill the act; Mongo dances, and even some hunters applaud. Donut’s dissatisfaction with the staging contrasts with the act’s effect on the room. The scene also establishes that large animals can be kept out of the protected guest chamber until their staged appearance is needed.
The masquerade’s guest list brings an unplanned arrival into Ballroom A. Signet, Imogen’s half-sister and enemy, enters after saying that Apito personally invited her. The guards retreat rather than remove her. Signet understands that the seal prevents Imogen’s people from attacking her inside the gathering, and she waits for her sister while speaking with the judges. Her presence turns the protected room into a place where the queen must eventually face the person whose revenge she has been avoiding. Carl had arranged for Signet to hide elsewhere in the castle; he had not brought her into the ballroom himself.
Ferdinand, Imogen’s familiar and Donut’s former mate, first appears to the crawlers as an overlay from the queen’s chamber. He can touch Carl, while Carl’s hand passes through him. The one-sided contact confirms that the guests’ shared view does not grant equal physical access. Ferdinand later travels through the castle toward Ballroom A, placing him where Donut can reach him directly. Carl’s group uses the stage and Donut’s exceptional charisma in an attempt to make him her minion. Her charm potion succeeds during her later performance, and the system adds Ferdinand to her party. What begins as a tense encounter across the ballroom overlay becomes a change of allegiance within the event.
Donut’s final talent act makes fuller use of Ballroom A’s stage. She sings while Britney accompanies her on guitar and casts a charm that draws the room’s attention toward a chosen subject. The light then moves to Big Tina, whose dance and wand deepen the audience’s absorption. The act keeps crawlers, hunters, and Imogen watching the stage while Carl’s allies prepare for the seal’s end. Tina’s appearance is also tied to her own story, rather than serving only as a distraction: Signet urges Carl to understand that Tina’s desired reunion is already close at hand. The room’s performance rules let the group put animals, magic items, and an unusually powerful attention spell in front of the queen without starting an ordinary fight.
Failure of the ballroom system
Outside Ballroom A, Sledge and the changelings try to enter the castle and seize its defensive towers. Mantises contest that assault. Samantha moves through the castle toward the third-floor control chamber while Diwata and her offspring threaten the same area. The people in Ballroom A receive reports and hear explosions, but the seal keeps them inside. Imogen arrives during the crisis and discovers that she cannot simply leave to address it. She takes a seat before the stage and orders the performances to continue.
Samantha’s destruction of the control crystals shakes the hall. The buffet overturns, and damaged floor tiles expose an apparently impossible view of moving bug remains below the crawlers’ feet. The hunters, occupying a different physical floor, see damage in the ceiling of their own ballroom. For a time the goodwill ballroom overlay continues to function despite the blast. The visible contradiction exposes the layered construction of a gathering that had seemed to occupy one room. It also gives Carl’s group an opening to prepare weapons and an escape while the protections are unstable.
The decisive breach comes from Signet. She begins a spell that requires her own death and uses the blood and memories carried in her tattoos. As Donut’s act fixes attention on Tina, Signet chooses to sacrifice herself in Imogen’s presence. The floor opens beneath her, and she is taken into the Nothing. A system notice then declares the Butcher’s Masquerade failed to cast and the chamber’s protection ended. The judges and Chaco disappear. The hall that had prevented combat becomes the site of a direct fight.
Dinosaurs leap from the stage into the hunters, while Samantha and a surge of mantis offspring enter through damage in the ballroom structure. Mongo and Kiwi bring down Vrah. Signet’s released tattoo figures surround Imogen, although they cannot finish her by themselves. Imogen strikes Carl with magic, and Ferdinand intervenes to protect Donut’s side. The stage remains important even after the seal falls: Tina and Kiwi move through its linked space, and Donut uses it to reach a potion concealed on Kiwi. The same arrangement that had supported a controlled talent show now funnels combatants, animals, and equipment into a collapsing battle.
Ballroom A does not survive as a stable site of the final confrontation. The damaged castle is transferred to the Ninth Floor with the changelings and some of the beings inside it. Crawlers, hunters, and Imogen remain behind where the building stood, suspended briefly in the air before the floor’s concluding fight proceeds. The masquerade thus ends with the physical separation underlying Ballroom A laid bare: the party’s apparent shared hall, its protective ritual, and finally the castle itself all give way, while the conflict it contained continues outside its walls.
