Areson the Wise is a level 45 elite ogre, circus strongman, and member of Signet's allied group. He is the brother of Apollon the Mighty and Herman the Fleet. Having survived Scolopendra's attack because he was in the Hunting Grounds, Areson later protects camps, hunts off-world hunters, and joins the awakened NPC forces that continue into Faction Wars. Areson belongs to a trio of brothers associated with the circus world. Apollon was in the Over City when Scolopendra struck and was lost, while Herman was in Larracos and his fate was initially unknown. Areson survived because the Hunting Grounds placed him outside the main disaster zone. As an ogre strongman, Areson relies on exceptional physical power. His speech is plain and sometimes comic, including offers to squeeze enemies until they provide answers. The simplicity of his phrasing should not be confused with disloyalty or passivity. Areson participates in the chaotic conflict involving Claude Sludgington the Fourth and survives. He also supports Signet's larger assault network during the Butcher's Masquerade period. His value lies in dependable heavy force, but his role is embedded in reconnaissance, civilian protection, and collective planning rather than isolated boss duels. Areson later appears among the awakened NPC forces aligned with the Earth crawlers and remains active through Faction Wars. No named Book 8 scene confirms a later death.
